5.0 out of 5 stars The Mehmet Oz segment, June 2, 2008
Best-selling author Dr. Mehmet Oz comes to speak about his new book, co- authored with Michael Roizen,"You on a Diet". In the course of it he provides a number of health - tips which for me were 'new'. One is the extreme importance of waist- size as predictor of cardiac problems. The fat in the middle, Oz says, goes deep around the internal organs. Oz recommends that people take control of their lives, change their diets, learn to exercise. His claim is that it an extra one- hundred calories a day which can make all the difference. He recommends resistance- exercise , walking, and in general being 'active'. He says he himself has a Mediterranean diet which includes the drinking of wine at the latter part of the meal in place of dessert. He considers desserts an unnecessary and harmful addition to the meal, and says they were introduced quite late in human civilization, by the Medicis. Oz is a personable and voluble fellow and says his aim is to teach people that seventy percent of the control over the process of aging is in their hands. He recommends eating what is called in Yiddish a 'forspeis' before the meal to get the hormone going which will tell us that we have had enough. He says nuts are good for this especially almonds, and walnuts. Oz says that each person must derive the right combination of foods, the diet suitable to themselves. He says he is a big fan of olive oil and tomato dressing . Oz also says that about twenty percent of very obese people are so for genetic reasons and that these people can be helped by a special operation. He is clear, and he makes sense.
