4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant Renaissance Man, March 10, 2008
This review is from: Charlie Rose with Dr. Nathan Myhrvold (November 15, 2004) (DVD)
The former Chief of Technical Operations at Microsoft , the former pupil of Steven Hawking at Cambridge, the well- known amateur chef, the well- known amateur paleontologist and dinosaur freak , Nathan Myhrvold comes to speak with Charlie Rose about his interests and obsessions. He opens with a long description of what he regards as a major danger now facing mankind , one not given sufficient attention- biological warfare. He points out that small groups of people could create microbes which could kill millions. He reckons this to be a greater danger than nuclear- weapons since the latter require a complicated infrastructure for their construction and use.
After a long segment on biological warfare he talks to Charlie Rose about his time with Hawking at Cambridge, and his continued interest in cosmological and astronomical questions. His intelligence comes easily and clearly in a most unpretentious even folksy style of speech. He talks about Microsoft and Google, their business models and seems to be reserved about the whole 'open- source world'. He also talks about his own present company which concentrates on Inventions. All was intelligent and pleasant but I did not come away with a sense of learning something new of great significance.
