The Meredith - China and India segment, December 23, 2007
This review is from: Charlie Rose - Craig Newmark / Robyn Meredith / Wang Guoqing (July 19, 2007) (DVD)
The Forbes correspondent for China and India compares the two coming powers in her new book. She tells Charlie Rose that China is the factory of things, and India the supplier of services. She warns the U.S. that it simply cannot compete paying salaries ten times those of its competitors. She talks about India as a chaos of languages, cultures- and China as Mandarin uniform. She speaks about the ambition and energy- hunger of both of these massive nations. Her sense is that China is not about to become a democracy Western style overnight as that is not what its people really expect and want. They want Hong Kong-like prosperity.
She is informative but there are so many questions about China and India that she and Rose do not address in this interview. One is the American deficit and its debt to China. Another is the growing military build-up of China and its effort at achieving a super-power status. The third is its thrust to number- one- ness its challenge to the U.S. A fourth is the rogue activity of China in its dealing with nations like North Korea and Iran.
So while this is an informative interview I sensed it could have given a lot more.
