Charlie Rose has devoted a number of programs to the economic situation in the United States. This one is in my opinion the most informative, thoughtful and interesting of all. Pete Peterson speaks about the loss of America's industrial base, the living on credit, the fall- off in savings, the debt to China, the growing income gap between the very rich and the rest, the vast problem with the baby boomer generation moving into the age of Social Security entitlements, the Federal Government's obligations to future generations, the growing strength of China, India, the energy problem. Peterson is articulate and humble as he speaks about his desire to give back to the America which has given him so much. He is on the show in part to announce the creation of a fund which will help young people develop their entrepreneurship skills.
The son of Greek immigrants his story is a legendary American rags- to- riches success story. But the character that has emerged as it appears in this conversation anyone is a sober, and wise one.
