4.0 out of 5 stars The Gail Sheehy The post- fifty Passage, June 29, 2008
This review is from: Charlie Rose with Pete Sampras; Gail Sheehy (July 14, 1995) (DVD)
Gail Sheehy speaks to Charlie Rose about her book, "New Passages". This concerns those over fifty- five. Sheehy contends that the extension of average life- span has meant that adults are confronted with a new passage. They have periods of twenty to forty years or more to live this new passage. Sheehy says women in their earlier years are always trying to0 please parents, teachers, children, bosses, others. She suggests that in this new phase they must focus on developing and pleasing themselves. Men in this passage move, she says , towards greater uncertainty. They are more silent with what is happening to them and have a more difficult time. Sheehy talks about women who begin in this second stage to become more managerial. She speaks about Men who have to move from a competitive phase to one which is more submissive and cooperative. She does not talk about the disabled, or those for whom extra long life means extra long suffering.
While some of what she says provides an insight, I thought the discussion contained too many generalities.
