4.0 out of 5 stars A non- critical look at Science and its role in Society, April 16, 2008
This review is from: Charlie Rose - Charlie Rose Science Series: The Imperative of Science (April 7, 2008) (DVD)
Charlie Rose and Nobel Prize Winners Paul Nurse and Harold Varmus are joined by RPI President Shirley Ann Jackson, and educator Harold Alberts in a conversation on Science and Society. The approach is 'boosterism'. It is a non- critical look at the role of Science in society, one which ignores the challenges presented by many potentially harmful scientific and technological developments. Arguments are made regarding the key driving power Science and Technology have in the Economy, regarding the need to greatly increase the quality of American scientific education. There is of course a complaint about the scarcity of funds and a call for more investment in Science. The scientific illiteracy of a good share of the American public is lamented, and suggestions made for its correction.

In general it is difficult to disagree with much of what is said here. It is all Apple Pie stuff. But the complex questions, such as which kinds of research to prioritize, how to deal with challenges and problems 'advances' in Science and Technology brought to the world- are not touched upon.

A tougher more realistic discussion would have been appreciated.
