Steve Martin has a modesty and intelligence, an originality and capacity to surprise, a quickness of response , an understatedness which make him a very 'winning' comic. He is also a highly- praised author and he talks to Charlie Rose about his autobiography. He focuses in it on the years of making it. And he says this is the part which interests him in most autobiographical works, the part which tells how the person got there. Martin also talks about his career in stand- up , how he got started, and how when he started to do movies discovered that he no longer had to go personally to every little place but could have the movie do that for him. He also speaks about his relationship with his parents, the distance at a certain point in middle years, and then the closeness toward the end.
