Ted Sorenson's primary claim to fame was his work as speechwriter and close advisor of President Kennedy. Charlie Rose starts off this show with a piece of puff so great ( Calling Sorenson the greatest Presidential Speechwriter of all time) that Sorenson himself has to correct it. Sorenson modestly admits that Lincoln and perhaps Jefferson were better than him. This aside they go on to speak about Sorenson's work as speechwriter and advisor to both President Kennedy and President Johnson. Sorenson is a bit plain and dull, as flat as the prairies of his native Nebraska. But he is also knowledgable, highly intelligent and very clear in his articulation of his thoughts. He is not a powerful speaker but rather a person of quiet persuasion and reason. His anecdotes on the Presidential years are interesting. A true insider he tells stories about Robert Kennedy asking Lyndon Johnson not to take the Vice- Presidency after JFK had offered it to him- about Johnson heaping gifts on his staff and then insulting and abusing them- about Kennedy preparing intently for what would be made to seem a spontaneous, light- hearted speech. All the historical information is interesting. But Sorenson has a strong self- righteous streak, and when he talks about himself , President Kennedy and Barack Obama being 'idealists' when opponents are not it calls for a bit of questioning. Charlie Rose however does not show much opposition or resistance here. Sorenson who claims to be an old friend of Mrs. Clinton dumps on her repeatedly. He says when Charlie Rose asks about a Vice- Presidential candidate that Obama should in no way consider Clinton. Sorenson also peddles as might be expected a strongly Leftist ideology, including a recommendation of talking with enemies.Read more ›
