Many of the tales told here are first-hand from the memory of the great former Lions tight end. Some, also, are from the memory and records of coauthor Larry Paladino, a veteran sports writer who covered the Lions for a dozen years for the Associated Press and then for numerous sports publications. But perhaps the most interesting anecdotes- some funny, some serious, some sad-are the ones discovered through research in the old, crumbling pages of Lions' yearly newspaper scrapbooks. Regardless of what tales peak the interests of readers, we're certain there is a lot to fascinate-and to pass on-for those who read Sanders's tales.

About the Author

Charlie Sanders arguably was the best tight end ever for the Detroit Lions. The 1968 third-round draft choice from Minnesota appeared in seven Pro Bowl games in a sterling 10-year career. He is assistant director of pro personnel and filled numerous other capacities since 1983. He and his wife, Georgianna, have nine children and live in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Coauthor Larry Paladino is a freelance writer who spent 12 years as Michigan's Associated Press sports editor. He has been editor of numerous sports magazines, served as editor of the Birmingham Eccentric newspaper, and has coauthored three other books. He and his wife, Marilyn, have two daughters and four grandchildren and live in Warren, Michigan.

My son is a Detroit Lions fanatic (we live in Dallas and hate the Cowboys!) I wanted to get him something about the history of the team that would be not so boring to read. I couldn't stop reading this and finished it before I wrapped it for him as a Christmas gift (I'm a 50 year old mom and not that much of a football fanatic). The stories were great - comical, heart-warming, surprising, interesting, etc... a history of the Lions told from a perspective that can be appreciated.

CHARLIE SANDERS DOES A GOOD JOB IN THIS MUST READ FOR ALL LION FANS. HE GIVES THE READER ASSORTED TIDBITS, STORIES AND INFO ABOUT MANY LION HEROES AND LEGENDS. AMONG THEM IS JOE SCHMIDT, BOBBY LAYNE AND ALEX KARRAS. HE TELLS US STORIES ABOUT THE GREAT LIONS TEAMS OF 1950'S THEN EXPANDS TO THE LIONS OF MANY ERAS. ALONG THE WAY HE TELLS US HIS PERSONAL EXPERIENCE SOME HUMOROUS AND SOME TRAGIC. ALL IN ALL THIS IS A GOOD READ AND I HOPE HE DOES ANOTHER BOOK SOMEDAY. I THINK CHARLIE WAS AN UNDERATED TIGHT END AND DESERVED MORE CREDIT. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO WATCH HIM PLAY AND A NICE EXPERIENCE READING HIS BOOK.
