Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The seventh episode of the Children of the Red King series moves the main plot forward an inch amidst yet more scheming and attempted murder by the increasingly powerful supporters of evil Count Harken. Charlie passes repeatedly into a painting that transports him (once with a snake that renders him invisible) into the dismal land of Badlock; by the end he has done a good deed for a grieving giant but left friend and pivotal character Billy Raven in the oily Count’s clutches. Confirmed fans will care. Grades 4-6. --John Peters --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From AudioFile

In this seventh installment of the Children of the Red King series, Charlie Bone, who has the ability to travel within photographs and paintings, finds himself heading back in time to stand among giants, who just happen to be his ancestors. Audie winner Simon Jones delivers every line of Jenny Nimmo's descriptive prose with a storyteller's warmth, wit, and assured intensity. Charlie enlists the help of his Uncle Paton and his friends from Bloor's Academy to battle the evil Baron Harken, to reunite Otis Yewbeam with the lovely Amoret, and to rescue Billy's dog, Runner Beam. Billy himself is left trapped back in shadowy Badlock, a situation that suggests the likelihood of another compelling story to come. Charlie Bone and the Shadow by Jenny Nimmo was a great addition to her series. I teach Science and also run the Literary Guild Reading Club for our school. So I like to read what the kids are reading. I also like to be able to recommend books to them that I think they will like. I have enjoyed the Charlie Bone series. Her writing is easily read and she has a nice use of words. The characters are well developed and the students relate to them well. She has a nice mix of good and evil characters with a lot of humor thrown in. The book is a nice length and the ending makes you anticipate the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, December 7, 2008

I am 16 and have followed Charlie Bone since the series came out. I love these books and I think they are great for any age. The characters are so relatable, and I have always told anyone who would listen that I would want to play Olivia if they ever made a movie. Now I am a bit old, but would still love to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, June 1, 2009

Did you ever dream about waking up and having powers? Well Charlie Bone found out that he could go into pictures and artwork. Charlie, along with his friends, need to save the endowed (a special group of "gifted" children) and save Billy from the evil shadow who is trying to destroy the good. Will they destroy him or will Charlie Bone finally lose? Read "Charlie Bone and the Shadow" to find out what happens to Charlie and his friends.

This is a book that keeps you wanting to read more. You will never see half the things coming. Once you finish one great book you will want to go directly into the next. I would recommend this to anyone who liked Harry Potter, mystery books, and magic. It is not the same as Harry Potter, each kid has their own special magic and they work together to defeat the evil.

Jenny Nimmo is a British author of numerous great books for children, including many fantasy and adventure novels. She has many books about a lot of different subjects. Nimmo is a wonderful author and I would recommend a lot of her books. Read as Charlie encounters many crazy problems and overcomes them with the help of his friends in all seven books.
