This review is from: Charlie Rose with Stephen Jay Gould; with Herb Ritts; Cindy Crawford (October 25, 1996) (DVD)
Stephan J. Gould comes to Charlie Rose with a book "Full House" whose argument is that Evolution is not progressive, not towards higher intelligence and greater complexity. Gould aims to put the 'two-legged forked creature' in its place and tells us that the most successful kind of life our Earth is bacteria which fills all kinds of niches and environments no other kind of life can fill. He tells us that 'complexity' is not always the key to survival and that in local environments it may be the more simple creatures which are the better adaptation. Gould also goes into other things, including why no batter is likely to hit four- hundred again, and how he has recovered from a rocky two - year bout with cancer. Gould is an extremely intelligent and pleasant person but this does not mean that he is always right. My bet is that somehow we have a better understanding of 'bacteria' than they do of us. And that this somehow does present a certain 'higher quality in life' even if only a few millenium.
