3.0 out of 5 stars The Jason Epstein segment, July 8, 2008
This review is from: Charlie Rose with Stephen Roach, Bob Woodward, Byron Wien & Paul Krugman; Jason Epstein (January 4, 2001) (DVD)
The legendary editor and key- player in New York's intellectual life comes to Charlie Rose with his book on the publishing business. He believes the Industry is undergoing a transformation bigger than the Gutenberg revolution. It is leading to books- on- demand and a different conception of marketing books. It may he believes eliminate whole worlds of middle- men and bring about a direct connection between writer and reader. Epstein tells Charlie Rose how he got the idea for non- fictional paperbooks, how he founded Anchor Books. He speaks about his editing and tells the story of how he along with Robert Lowell founded the NY Review of Books at the time of a New York City newspaper strike. He says that it became profitable quite early and has gone well for a long time.He does not speak however about its Chomskyite ideology and its Anti - Americanism.
Epstein is a bit slow and not at all witty or brilliant. Apparently these are not qualities required for being one of the major editors of the past half- century.
