Menuhin surprised me by his genuine modesty and good- nature. I had expected from reading of him a very radical Left egomaniac. Instead he spoke of his not liking the word 'prodigy' because it suggests that only a few have talent. He spoke about his concern for others, for creativity, romance, the inner spiritual life. He spoke about his own spiritual roots, his father a Rabbi's concern for Peace and the well- being of Humanity. He said that he has left nothing in the way a composer leaves something. Charlie Rose as he often does spoke of the guest's accomplishments. He asked him about the claim that Menuhin peaked early and his later years were decline. Menuhin said that he believed he played at his best until fifteen or twenty years ago. i.e. around the age sixty. Rose tells Menuhin about Enesco's saying that hearing Menuhin play Bach at the age of eleven was the greatest musical experience of his life. Menuhin is laid- back, gentle, elegant, civilized, intelligent.
