The Dove Foundation approved "Charlie: A Toy Story" is the latest production from the Engine 15 Media Group. From what I've seen, this organization specializes in low-budget kid's fare that smacks of amateur filmmaking. Yes, this family friendly endeavor has a positive message and that's commendable. That does not, however, automatically make it a necessary DVD purchase. Anytime you say something critical about a feature made for children, people go out of their way to condemn your opinion. "Lighten up, it's cute enough for kids." I patently refuse to give in to this ideology, though, because I want quality entertainment choices for my kids! I want to recognize the great efforts of those toiling to make smart, challenging, and truly memorable work for the younger generation and not just rubber stamp anything with the highest rating possible. That said, "Charlie: A Toy Story" is pleasant enough and one of more fully realized films that I've seen from this enterprise.

Although the movie markets itself as a "Home Alone" clone with a dog, the screenplay has a bigger message. There are strong religious overtones to the movie about the power of faith. It's not overt (a mystical figure with a Gabriel name tag is the most glaring example), so if you want to interpret things more secularly--let's just say that the movie has a magical element. The movie has some adult themes which are actually integrated fairly well. Caden (Raymond Ochoa) gets a new pup for his birthday from his father, who happens to be a toy maker with a store on the brink of bankruptcy. A perpetual dreamer, his wife is fed up of always being the responsible partner in the union. He shows Caden a wondrous new invention that is sure to save the family from financial devastation.

My kids' loved this movie. They couldn't stop talking about it after the first time they watched it. Needless to say it's been watched more than once.

My kids really enjoyed this. It kept their attention and I love hearing them giggle. They are ages 7, 6, and 4. The four year old didn't understand everything happening, but it kept his attention for most of the film. This is a great accomplishment for a busy four year old boy! As a parent, I really appreciated that I didn't have to worry about the content. I'm sure the kids will request it again for movie night.

I loved the messages of "Just Believe", Never give up and using your imaginaton. I really liked the relationship between Jack & Caden. The bullies, Scooter & Robbie reminded me of Joe Pesci & Daniel Stern. But overall the movie needed just a bit more... but for a super family friendly movie; I highly recommend it. The kids will laugh and the younger ones will want to watch it over and over.
