5.0 out of 5 stars The Anne Frank segment Respectful and moving conversation Are people really in the end good at heart?, April 23, 2008
Charlie Rose talks with four of those involved in a new Broadway production of the 'Diary of Anne Frank'. This turns out to be one of the most moving segments I have seen on 'Charlie Rose 'in which even of those involved adds to the discussion in a dignified, sensible and moving way. The actress Linda Lavin who plays Mrs. Van Damm in the play speaks of the pain involved in going deeper and deeper into the story. The actress who plays the thirteen year old Anne, sixteen year old Natalie Portman is especially winning and beautiful. The director James Lapine and the writer Wendy Kesselman also contribute new information on Anne's story. They explain that Anne very much wanted her Diary to be published, that she even edited with this purpose in mind. They marvel at Anne's unusual maturity of judgment, feeling and humanity. Anne's Diary like Elie Wiesel's 'Night' are stories of individuals which have proven capable of transmitting a certain sense of the Holocaust - the evil and suffering, the struggle to remain human in the most extreme situations- the greatness of the loss.
