4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Will Shortz segment Filling in a few of the squares, November 29, 2007
The New York Times Crossword Puzzle editor explains some of the tricks of the trade. He says that he does not write the puzzles but edits them, selects them from the many selections he reads each day. He tells us that he has however in recent years made the puzzle be more filled with items from contemporary culture. This is the reason I like it less as I do not understand most of the references. He claims that doing the crossword is great mental exercise. He cites Stanley Newman as the fastest puzzle solver of all time.
He tells us of the mental pleasure of solving a puzzle. He tells us that physicians say doing crosswords helps against Alzheimer's.
As a one - time doer of NY Times Crossword puzzles I enjoyed getting a bit of inside information. This segment was not however as exciting as the feeling one has when one rushes from one right answer to another thrilled at the prospect of getting the whole puzzle done.
