This review is from: Charlie Rose with Helen Whitney & Lorenzo Albacete; John McCain (September 13, 1999) (DVD)
Helen Whitney an ABC documentary film-maker and Lorenzo Albacete from the Archdiocese of New York come to talk about Pope John II. They present different conceptions of who he is. Whitney sees him as a man of contradictions , as a man of political action who helped bring the Soviet Empire down and yet one who forbids priests to engage in political activity- as a person admired by liberals for his great reaching out to the poor and distressed of mankind, and disliked by them for his conservatism on sexual matters. His friend Albacete sees him as a man with a divine mission who carries this out with total conviction and faith. He sees no contradiction in his actions. Whitney also cites Pope John II 's dramatic efforts to acknowledge past Catholic persecution of the Jews, and to redefine the relation doctrinally and practically.
In the second segment of the show John McCain talks about his own Presidential campaign in 2000. He speaks about the candidate's need to have not only a political vision but a capacity to articulate that vision. The focus however is on the book he has written in which he tells of the naval legacy of his grandfather and father both of him were Navy Admirals. In this regard he speaks modestly of his own military service and his effort to walk however imperfectly in their footsteps.
