Because I have 4 kids and do a LOT of laundry, I was looking for an inexpensive but effective laundry detergent. I even briefly tried making my own, using a recipe I found on the Internet. That recipe included ground soap, and resulted in T-shirts with permanent yellow stains around the necks and underarms. Apparently, soap reacts with something in sweat.

Still searching for an alternative to the expensive stuff, I stumbled on Charlie's Soap here on Amazon, and decided to try a small bag to see if it was effective. The stuff is amazing! It removed those seemingly permanent yellow stains left by my homemade soap misadventure, and will take out all kinds of other stains. Over time, it's even managed to remove the ground-in dirt from the bottoms of my kids' socks. Charlie's actually isn't soap, chemically speaking, so it won't cause the trouble that a true soap does. I can use it on my microfiber cleaning cloths, and they don't wind up gummed up with residue.

Because I'm in Colorado, and it's insanely dry here in the winter, I do still use dryer sheets, but only with loads that include static-prone synthetic fabrics. In the summer, I don't need the dryer sheets at all.

The other big plus in my opinion is that unlike some of the high-end brands, Charlie's is scent-free. I dislike heavy perfumes that linger on the clothes permanently. Charlie's just leaves everything smelling fresh and clean.

Another plus to Charlie's is convenience. My laundry area is small, so I keep the gigundous bucket in the basement, and refill the 80-load bag that I bought originally. The little bag takes up almost no space in the laundry area.

The stuff has turned me into a Charlie's evangelist -- I just bought a bag to give to my brother!

Unfortunately, I have to come back and amend my review of a few months ago. Here's the old one:

I'm very pleased with Charlie's soap. So pleased that I'm ordering a giant bucket of it and transitioning all of my laundry over to Charlie's from now on.

I bought this soap to wash diapers FuzziBunz Perfect Size Cloth Diaper, Periwinkle, Size Small 7-18 lbs. It does the trick. No residue. No odor. Just clean diapers. I started washing the baby's clothes in it, too, and then my own. I'm a happy customer and recoomend this product for it's efficacy, versatility, and economic cost.

New details:

My fuzzi bunz inserts are retaining a urine smell now, and it keeps getting stronger and stronger. I dropped in on Diaper Lab, a local cloth diaper store and resource, and the moms working there explained that the problem is probably the combination of Charlie's Soap and my region's very hard water. They said that Charlie's soap is a wonderful product in soft water, but that it doesn't rinse out well in hard water, and this can lead to buildup of both the product and the urine that it should be washing out. There is a warning on the Charlie's website about hard water, so this shouldn't be news to me, but it was. My mistake!

I just wanted to pass along that detail to the community at large. If you have soft water, then I highly recommend this product (I loved it for those early months before the buildup occurred!) but if your water is hard like mine, then find a similarly simple product that is more compatible with your water type.

If you don't know your water type, it tends to be regional.

I have used charlies soap for over 5 years and love it!!! It is great for cloth diapers and I stopped using tide and downy on all of our laundry after using it for the first time! It cleans so well and makes the clothes so soft I do not need fabric softner! I now buy a 5 gal bucket and it lasts for a year with my family of 4 and cloth diapers! I also use it to clean my bath tub and toilet! It cleans soap scum and stains so well in the rest of the house.

Charlie's soap is simply the best. It's green, it works and you only use a tiny amount to get the job done. I will never switch.
Thanks Charlie, who ever you are.

This product is listed to contain "a proprietary blend" of coconut based detergents and washing soda.
Being both a caustic and a detergent, you wouldn't want to leave this on your skin, but is generally recognized as safe.

Washing Soda is Sodium Carbonate (NaCO3). It's been used by itself as a cleaning agent for over 5000 years, and is generally recognized as safe. It's literally dug up out of the ground and cleaned of any dirt. It contains sodium (a metal that makes water soft, and is in salt and baking soda too), plus carbonic acid (aka fizzy water without the water).

I was really curious about "coconut derived detergents", but I couldn't find out what their "proprietary formula" was.

So I looked to see what coconut derived detergents actually exist, to at least see what we're talking about. Then I realized why it's proprietary. We'd all be non-impressed with how common these are. You'll find them in toothpaste, shampoo, bubble bath, etc. Nothing special. If properly rinsed, they're low irritation, and generally very effective at dissolving oils and such.

The most common coconut based detergents are:
* Cocamidopropyl betaine
* Cocamidopropyl diethanolamine
* Lauryl Glucoside
* alkyl Lauryl Sulfate (alkyl here usually means Sodium or Ammonium)

These chemicals mix with water and with oil, allowing the daily grind to be dissolved and swished out of your fabrics. They also give you bubbles when swished.

How they're made:
* First, coconut is harvested, dried, shelled, and pressed.
* Coconut meat is 60% oil by dry mass.
* Coconut oil is 92.1% saturated fatty acids between 6 and 18 carbons.
* Lauric acid is C12, and accounts for 47.5%.
