5.0 out of 5 stars astounding though little heard, September 22, 2004
This review is from: Charly (Audio CD)
I saw the movie because I'd read the book (Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes); and I got the album - on vinyl - because I loved the soundtrack. This album was created by Ravi Shankar with some of the best studio and jazz musicians working in LA in the late 60s (Tom Scott, for instance). The whole thing was improvised by them, with Shankar as the impressario, selecting, amplifying, focussing, until they had the cues for the movie all recorded and in place. Notes on the vinyl release indicate that he allowed the musicians a great deal of freedom in what and how they played, and the result is truly astounding. I've been searching for a CD of this for years, so it's disappointing now to find the listing, only to have it be "Out of print." I hope that, with the release of the film on DVD in mid-October, World Pacific Jazz will see fit to re-release the CD>
