a total tearjerker,
By While it is clean enough to take your pre-teens to, it is not naive about the hurdles of modern romance. I went to see this film with a group of about 10 women of varying ages. We all laughed. We all cried. We all loved it! Kleenex is NOT optional.

A Five-Hanky Romance,
By EarthMama "Caitlin" (Northeast USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Charly (DVD)
This is a story about an unlikely pair-- a strait-laced Mormon boy and a wild NY girl-- who manage to find love despite their differences. But can there be a happy ending when they come from two different worlds? This love story, based on a 70's book that I never read, had me sobbing at least four different times throughout the movie. Then I had my husband watch it with me the second time. My husband never cries. He cried.I would say the acting in this movie is somewhat inconsistent, at times not %100, but at other times brilliant; also this is a low-budget film by general standards. But the story and soundtrack make up for any slight imperfections. If you don't like over-the-top, sappy love movies, stay away. But if you like a good, clean romance film, this is for you. This is an LDS(Mormon)-made film intended for a broader audience, so if you're not Mormon, you shouldn't let that deter you. What an awesome movie!

I laughed, I cried and I am going to buy,

I enjoy the mormon movies and when I saw "the singles ward" and I was told the boy reading the book Charly is the main character in the movie I had to go.The closest theater that was playing the movie was three states over. All I can say is that it was wonderful. I was even impressed how well the actor pulled off his character for if you saw his spotlight in the other movie you would not think he could do a romantic lead. It proved what a good actor he is. I am hoping that they keep up the plot line and do another. If another one comes along I think it would be worth another trip to go see it. This is one that is a good addition to any DVD library. Like all the LDS/ mormon movies I have seen, I don't hesitate letting my children watch them, this one is no exception. This is good clean family entertainment.

I love this movie! It is such a powerful love story. While not exactly like the book, this updated version of this genuine love story is sure to be a moving experience. You will laugh and cry. And no, you do not need to be Mormon to fully appreciate the message of this movie, however if you are Mormon this is a MUST have for your movie collection.

Astounding...,

My wife read the book as a teen, and bought the movie recently. She didn't tell me anything about it before we watched it; and I can't for the life of me remember being more emotionally moved by a movie. Clearly the ending is sad, but I was impressed with the depth of the relationship and the way this film addressed the sincere love between a husband and wife that truly love each other and get the eternal nature of marriage. I couldn't recommend this more strongly for married couples.

The Mormon chick flick of the year -- and the only one.,
By Jim Harmon (Spokane, WA USA) - See all my reviews "Charly" is the story of one Charlene (aka Charly), a free-spirited art student from New York who is set up with a strict Mormon boy, Sam, to introduce her to the beauties of Salt Lake City and the Mormon Church. A rocky relationship turns into love that promises to last forever. Heather Beers plays a convincing role as Charly who is unpredictable throughout. Jeremy Elliot plays Sam who remains the rather dull Mormon. Adam Thomas Anderegg directs the story by LDS author Jack Weyland into a beautifully-crafted (on a strict budget) adaptation for screen.

This is that one-in-a-million love stories that makes your heart sing for the joy of human love and its ability to conquor so many obstacles to find itself and bless two lives with joy. From the book to the movie they did a wonderful job in keeping the spirit of the characters and powerfully bring them to life on the screen. Beautifully done and magically captured. A must see for all who have loved, ever hope to love and all who have lost one they dearly loved.

Jack Weyland Fan,
By A Customer

Okay, so I was one of those girls that loved reading Jack Weyland books during my teenage years. Well, then I met Jack as a Physics teacher. My impression of his books changed quite a bit. Yes, love and romance can happen in ways as described in his books. There also though could be a little more reality in his depictions. This movie I thought actually did put more reality into the depiction of dating and love situation. Yes, some of Charly's acting moments were a bit cheesy. Heather Beers herself claims she is better at Drama than Comedy. The drama however, definitely won me over. I just can't watch this movie without crying. For anyone who has ever lost a close loved one of a young and untimely death... you just can't watch such a love story without weeping. In fact the love story was so moving that the first time my husband and I watched this movie together we both just cried at the end. Then my husband said to me, "Now you said Jack Weyland was a physics teacher?" Having grown up in Utah I actually know straight-laced calculating... perhaps naive guys just like Sam. However, having lived the last 10 years in Washington DC I also know many Charly's. Charly was portraying a "Big City" girl. However, the authored perception is only of what a "Big City" girl would be like. It didn't seem like there was actual experience as to what it is really like more "imagined" to be like in NY or DC. But, that's okay. Mostly, I appreciated the teaching moments about trusting God through the pain of death and suffering. Such a real pain and agony to leave young love and a young baby behind. Somehow I too thought naively that trusting God meant that he wouldn't let my brother be taken away from his 3 little sons. That perhaps I could see a miracle and have my brother alive again. I found answers in this movie. Answers that helped fill the void and release some pain. Time does heal. Faith is not blind. Trust and Faith in God are imperative for living in this world, yet it does not mean we are shielded from the pain and injustices of life. I loved the movie. Thanks Jack! |
