Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Her name identifies an industry. Say "Charmayne" and it's like dropping Babe Ruth's moniker or Michael Jordon's or Lance Armstrong's. People who don't even follow the sport know that Charmayne James is the greatest barrel racer of all time.
Her record speaks volumes. She's the all-time leading money earner in the sport – the first-ever million-dollar earner. She's won the most professional barrel racing world championships (11) and was the first Women's Professional Rodeo Association member to earn the coveted #1 back number at the National Finals Rodeo. She holds the record for most consecutive NFR qualifications (19) for men or women, and she's won more individual world championships than any other woman in professional sports. She's also listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Charmayne conducts barrel racing clinics that are booked years in advance, and she's in demand as a speaker/clinician at horse expos and events worldwide. She's been featured in every major horse publication, as well as in Sports Illustrated, People Magazine, USA Today and others, and has appeared on "Good Morning America," the CBS "Morning Show," ABC "Wide World of Sports," and other major programs.
In her book, Charmayne shares the training techniques and philosophy that made her the most successful barrel racer in history. Also included are vignettes of horses and riders that illustrate Charmayne's approach to identifying and correcting problems in barrel racing, as well as examples and experiences from over 20 years as a world-class competitor in this exciting event.

This book is awesome. It explains in depth her training techniques, feeding programs, exercise programs, etc. Also, it's like an inside view of her life with barrels. I watched her training DVD first, and this book is BY FAR more helpful! It's inspiring, extremely helpful, and motivating. Not only did the book improve my times in the arena but also my relationship with my horse. It's a book that I will re-read for years to come. In my opinion, this is the best barrel racing book there is, period.

I found this book by world champion barrel racer, Charmayne James, very thorough and packed with interesting information. She offers advice from her own extensive experience. This book offers a look at what it takes to become an 11-time world champion from the woman herself.

I have been barrel racing for 12 years and this book includes many ideas and practices that I have never heard of before. She covered many different aspects of the sport like choosing a prospect and bloodlines, training and conditioning for the horse and rider, dealing with anxiety, sportmanship and professionalism, nutrition for the horse and rider, troubleshooting, and many more things, including an overview of her career and the great horses she has ridden.

This book has a glossy and attractive appearance inside that really hooked me when I was reading it. It's not all dry text or diagrams. I read it a little bit at a time, picking out the parts that looked interesting until I had read the whole book through twice. I highly recommend this very approachable and fun book to both the experienced barrel racer and the newcomer.

I was a bit skeptical that this would be a book pushing her endorsed products.. Boy, was I wrong! From the start to the finish, Charmayne is very thorough on things to look for in a horse, what and when to feed it, how to train it, how to excercise, equipment.. and the list goes on. I have read every book out there concerning barrel racing and in my opinion, this is one of the best.

I've been barrel racing along time (longer than Charmayne as I'm about 10 years older) I have watched her career with great interest along with all other barrel racers around the globe. There has been none better in our history. About three years ago when my old horse retired I thought I would too - however that decision has since been reversed & I purchased a new horse - good time to purchase Charmaynes book and DVD's. The general horsemanship is the same message I always tried to practice -however the pattern its self is way different and just makes so much sense. I'm loving this book, love reading up, practicing the pattern on my new horse and sharing with my friends. I feel like the old dog that can learn new tricks and its exciting. Totally love this book and recommend it to all barrel racers, young - old, green - experienced. thanks Charmayne and Scamper.
