Charmed is Charming,
By A Customer
This review is from: Charmed (Audio CD)
This is a surprisingly sophisticated, well-produced first album by singer-songwriter Sarah Pinsker. This young artist draws you into her emotional world with heartfelt, poetical lyrics and melodies that are catchy and evocative.Though Pinsker's folk roots are evident, the songs on Charmed span the spectrum from folk to rock (the tracks that include DC-based band 5th business are especially hard) without either undermining Pinsker's style or disconnecting you emotionally from the themes of her songs. Charmed is sometimes touching, sometimes a little weird, but most of all joyful. I guarantee you'll catch yourself singing it when you least expect.

Album equally as "Sweet and Strange",

This album is certainly eclectic. There are so many different sounds, all of which have pleased everyone i have played this CD for. This album has radio-quality sound and powerful lyrics all in one. I cannot decide which is my favourite song because each time I listen, I like them all more and more. I find myself singing along in my room, in the car, and even in the library. I can be sure of one thing though, Pinsker is making her way around campus. This album is like chocolate: you just cant get enough of it!

I stumbled across this gem at my local music store, and when I first heard it at the listening booth I fell in love with it almost instantly. Discovering such a refreshing collection of heartfelt, unpretentious folk-rock songs was like winning the lottery. I bought it without a second thought, and it has yet to leave my CD player. Sarah Pinsker is a virtuoso lyricist and songwriter, and her eleven original tracks on "Charmed" defy traditional categorization. Although the fluid, melodic rhythms of American folk are always present, Pinsker treats her audience with infusions of everything from country to hard rock to electronica. Amazingly, it all fits together just right, and the end result is a near-perfect album that's a joy to hear from start to finish. Some tracks--among them "Baggage," "Reinventing the Wheel," "C#m," and "Dream Out Loud"--are unforgettable; you'll find yourself humming the tunes long after you've heard them last. The songs also showcase Pinsker's literary talent; her lyrics read like poetry.

this stuff has really got some gravity to it. it's like in spinal tap when they turn it up to eleven. what i mean is, sarah pinsker knows how to turn it up to eleven. these songs are on eleven... its gritty when it needs to be and it's light and and airy when it needs to be. fifth business rules. they're the backup band. i wish they'd come to kenosha... or at least chicago... on "dream out loud" it's like your right there inside the music. it's wild...

Best folk/rock album of 2000!,

This thing blew me away. I've been in the scene since way back in the eighties, early eighties that is, and this is maybe one of my two or three favorite albums of the last ten years. You go, girl. I've been humming these tunes all month ever since I bought it. Serious lasting power. Every song has its own little quirks that keep you playing them over and over and over. Reminds me of Indigo Girls, Lucinda Williams, early REM, Folk Implosion, Cowboy Junkies, even Janis Joplin. I sure wish I could hear these songs live. I've been trying to play some of them myself. Sarah, if you're out there somewhere reading this, please, please, PLEASE play a show in Tulsa sometime soon. You'll have a full house if I've got anything to do with it.

charmed down under,

i dubbed this cd from a hostel owner in melbourne, the day before set out to drive to perth. it was the only tape i had in my car and it was the only one i needed. for those of you unfamiliar with australian geography, driving from melbourne to perth takes a little while. i don't know how you yanks convert real distances into miles but it's a bloody lot of them. i listened to "charmed" about 14 times. i picked up a hitchhiker out in the middle of the desert and he liked it too. now whenever i listen to it i'll remember 1000's of klicks of dry, cracked earth and dead kangaroos. probably not the image the artist was trying to conjure with these amazing songs. and they truly are incredible. buy this album, i say. i'll buy it for myself when my travels are over.
