A Must Have For Collectors, August 6, 2003
This review is from: Charming Gents of Stage & Screen (Audio CD)
What is unique about this cd is that it contains recordings by Frank Parker, Ben Bernie, Ted Lewis, and Red McKenzie whose recordings are virtually impossible to find anymore. The cd also has excellent liner notes that summarize the accomplishments of each singer spotlighted. I personally think Frank Parker's earlier version of "Two Cigarettes In The Dark" outshines Bing Crosby's more successful version. All of Ted Lewis's recordings are an absolute delight including the song on this cd. Ben Bernie had a distinctive voice that this cd brought back wonderful memories of. I would have much preferred Harry Richman's "I Love A Parade" to the song on this cd but unlike the song here you can get that song on the Harry Richman cd "Puttin' On The Ritz". Scat-singing lovers will take delight in Louis Prima's version of "The Lady In Red". To sum up, anyone who loves the crooning singing style or is curious about that style will love this cd. Collectors should also appreciate having this cd in their collection, too.
