Biography

Rivaled only by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Neville Marriner was one of the most important of the early figures who spearheaded the reawakening of modern interest in Baroque and early Classical music. 4.0 out of 5 stars It's Nice, but Hardly Competitive December 23, 2009
Format:Audio CD
This recording brings together the work prefaced by the famous Te Deum Prelude and a pleasing Magnificat. Happily, they are given stylish performance by Marriner and company. Unhappily, they add up to about 45 minutes of music, hardly enough to merit purchase at such a price, particularly when another recording of the Te Deum is readily available: Charpentier: Te Deum; Messe de Minuit de NoŽl.

Kurt Moll's bass is a bit shaky at times. The chorus flirts with the gravely sound that ruined its contribution to Marriner's recording of The Yeomen of the Gaurd (Gilbert & Sullivan: The Yeomen of The Guard / Marriner). Otherwise, these are pleasant renditions of baroque music that should, on the whole, be better known. Pity EMI didn't make them record a filler.

EDIT: Since the composition of this review, the price of this CD has declined to a mere $0.01. That price is a bit more reasonable than the $11+ dollars it was going for previously. Still, I don't like the choral sound.

Charpentier - Te Deum & Magnificat / Upshaw, Murray, Robinson, Aler, Moll; Marriner is a 1991 EMI Classics recording under the direction of Sir Neville Mariner who leads the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. We also get to hear Academy of Chorus of St Martin in the Fields under the direction of Lazlo Heltay. We get to hear Dawn Upshaw, sopano, Anne Murray soprano & contralto, Ethna Robinson contralto, John Aler, tenor and Kurt Moll, bass. Andrew Parmley has written the music notes. The lyrics are available in Latin, German, English and French. Truly a magnificient recording. Highly recommended indeed. 5/5.
