5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of Anderson's early years, June 20, 2000
This review is from: Chart Years (Audio CD)
In 1966, a teenaged Anderson signed with the small Chart label and immediately hit with her mother Liz's up-tempo composition "Ride, Ride, Ride." For the next two years, mom kept daughter charting with top-notch songs that played off her youthful exuberance like "If I Kiss You (Will You Go Away)" and "Promises, Promises." Outside writers entered the fray in 1969 and continued the success, with the equally playful "That's A No No" as well as the Wynette-like tearjerker "Our House Is Not A Home." Anderson would leave Chart in 1970 for the big time (Columbia Records) but the move didn't mean she was now Chartless. Chart mined Anderson's old albums for new singles to compete with her new Columbia recordings. They astutely selected remakes of hits like Hank Snow's "I've Been Everywhere" and the Osborne Brothers' "Rocky Top" which displayed Anderson at her most irresistibly chipper. Consequently, Chart got a handful of top 20 hits for about two years after she left the label. The Chart Years contains every single Chart released on Anderson (including all of the aforementioned), along with a few well-chosen album tracks like "Auctioneer" and "Sing Me A Sad Song." As her entire Chart catalog had been out of print for years, most people have forgotten or never heard these great early Anderson recordings. This reissue should help rectify that.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best pure country Lynn Anderson album, April 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Chart Years (Audio CD)
I had been looking for the song "If I Kiss You" for many years. When I finally found and purchased the CD I was pleasantly surprised with the other tracks. I had forgotten about "No Another Time", which was one of my favorites in college, and "Big Girls Don't Cry". Lynn's renditions of "Rocky Top" and "I've Been Everywhere" are good. The liner notes are good and I have a new appreciation for the song writing abilities of Lynn's mother, Liz. I will probably wear this CD out, the tracks are so good and bring back good country memories, in fact I am playing it now. By the way, I must be the only person on the planet who did not like the crossover hit "Rose Garden". However, in this album (before that era) Lynn's Pure County voice shines. Thanks to Renaissance/Sony Music Special Products.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Great Collection Of Music, Represents Security!, November 15, 1999
By
Gregory D. Wade (Anchorage, Alaska) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chart Years (Audio CD)
I recently received my copy of Lynn Anderson "Anthology - The Chart Years" CD. My Grandma raised me on her singing. Grandma has "The Best Of Lynn Anderson" on an 8 track tape (and many of her albums, as I do) that we'd always listen to when she drove me around in her 1966 Chevy II Nova, which by the way is the year I was born, in fact my birthday is coming up this week. This collection of music, is the greatest birthday present, since I received my copy of my absolute favorite singer Sylvia "Anthology", around this time in 1997. I was very insecure, when I was a little boy and when my Grandma would drive over 200 miles, one way, to pick me up and take me home with her, is when I'd feel the most secure. This music from Lynn Anderson takes me back to that time, like it was yesterday. Songs like..."Too Much Of You", "Sing Me A Sad Song", "Big Girls Don't Cry" and my all-time absolute favorite Lynn Anderson song ever..."I Live To Love You". As well as some of the more up-beat songs..."Promises, Promises", "No Another Time", "That's A No No" and "If I Kiss You"...Are so great to hear in crystal clear CD quality for the first time in my life, her voice on these songs, is so sweet and beautiful and it makes me proud to have been raised on her music. I can't wait to play this CD for my Grandma and see if it brings back nice memories for her too. I finally got the chance to meet Lynn Anderson for the first time last year in Reno after her performance, she treated me like a long lost relative and was gracious enough to pose for a few pictures with me, I cherish those photos! In my opinion, Renaissance Records is the best record company for bringing back so very many classic country artists and their music. A BIG THANK YOU....TO JOHN EDWARDS AND EVERYONE AT RENAISSANCE RECORDS! If you like Lynn, as I do...You'll want to check out Sylvia "Anthology" as well. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL collection of Lynn's early hits!, November 12, 1999
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chart Years (Audio CD)
This collection of hits is from early in Lynn's career when she recorded on the Chart label. Some of her best recordings were from those days and every chart topper is included in this collection. This is the first time that the ORIGINAL recordings of these songs have been available on CD. I have waited for many years for these songs to become available on CD and this collection makes it well worth the wait. The best of the best are here. "I'm Alright", "Rocky Top", "That's A No-No" and many others including her breathtaking (literally) version of "I've Been Everywhere." If you love Lynn's music like I do, or just love country music, this CD is a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars a Rose-bud garden, December 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Chart Years (Audio CD)
The marketing "geniuses" at Renaissance should be ashamed of themselves. The cover of this anthology covering Lynn Anderson's 1960s Chart Records tenure plastered on a picture of Lynn circa 1983 from the cover of her big Permian Records comeback album BACK. This very strange graphic faux pas does nothing to take away from the sheer brilliance of Lynn's first successful recordings. The sampling here is truly top-notch from her pre-"Rose Garden" period. Lynn was singing about heartbreak and infidelity at tender age with the conviction of someone far more advanced for their years. That was Lynn Anderson's singing gift. Guided by her talented singer/songwriter mother Liz Anderson, young Lynn learned a great deal about lyric interpretation in a widely ignored genre of music. This is indeed a treasure chest of great middle to late century country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lynn in the sixties, April 12, 2003
This review is from: Chart Years (Audio CD)
Although Lynn achieved her greatest successes in the early seventies with Columbia records, her sixties recordings for the small Chart label were every bit as good. This is the only compilation of that music so far released on CD.

Rocky top is perhaps the most important track here. This often-covered song was a top 20 country hit for her despite competition from the Osborne brothers. Ride ride ride was Lynn's first recording for Chart, while other notable recordings include If I kiss you, No another time and Big girls don't cry.

Lynn also recorded plenty of covers back then. Among those included here are I've been everywhere (Hank Snow), It wasn't god who made honky tonk angels (Kitty Wells), All my friends are gonna be strangers (just titled Strangers in the track listing - Merle Haggard) and Auctioneer (Leroy Van Dyke). All these are, of course, brilliant.

These recordings are very similar in style to Lynn's seventies music, but if anything are more solidly country. Buy this if you can find it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lynn Anderson - CHART HITS, November 13, 1999
This review is from: Chart Years (Audio CD)
Believe it or not, there was a Lynn Anderson LONG before "Rose Garden", her world-wide HUGE hit. She was a regular on the Lawrence Welk TV show, and recorded many albums, tracks from which are here, for the first time in a quarter of a century! What a treat to hear "Ride, Ride, Ride", "Big Girls Don't Cry", "I've Been Everywhere" and "Rocky Top" a country staple that never goes out of style. There's pure country power here, from one of it's best female vocalists ever--Miss Lynn Anderson. Grab this, NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Important Country Reissue Collection in Years!, November 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Chart Years (Audio CD)
This is the most important country reissue collection in years - the early hits of one of country music's greatest stars of the 60's & 70's Lynn Anderson, available for the first time in well over 25 years! Lynn was just eighteen years old when she signed on with the small Chart label (her mom, Liz Anderson, was then one of the top women singers in country) and Lynn took off like a rocket. Barely a year after her first record was released the Academy of Country Music named her Top Female Vocalist! She is certainly one of the most important women to ever sing country and one of the most influential bringing in a more pop and contemporary sound to the music. These are all great tracks and this is an invaluable collection of her 1966-70 work when she was the No. 3 woman in the country field behind only Loretta and Tammy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lynn Anderson's Anthology Vol 2: "I'm Alright", July 15, 2009
This review is from: Chart Years (Audio CD)
This particular song of Ms. Anderson's is particularly upbeat, and pop like. If you like Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire", you'll hear similarily in the instrumental presentation. It was Very hard to track down this song, as it was released in the sixties on vinyl. The cost of the CD was hefty, but I had to have it. With her vocal cords and talent, everything she sings is excellent.
