Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-Chase Manning is hoping to make the Sixth Grade Honors Orchestra next year and tryouts are today. The only problem is that there might not be an Honors Orchestra if the school can't raise enough money by auctioning off an expensive cello at the annual fundraising dinner. When the instrument goes missing, the principal turns to Chase to find the guilty party. Who would want to sabotage the music program? The fact that the story takes place in the course of one day gives a sense of urgency to each chapter as Chase follows the clues to the culprit. The characters and situations are not wholly believable, and the supporting characters lack depth, but kids who have graduated from Scooby-Doo will like Chase's perseverance. A fun mystery with a likable main character and a lot of red herrings.-Terry Ann Lawler, Phoenix Public Library, AZα(c) Copyright 2011. Think "24" for kids. This mystery is set within the constraints of a 24 hour time period and creates suspense the whole way through. As a teacher myself, I will say, kids will be immediately taken to this. A number of kids in my own classroom have read it and read it again. They won't put it down! Steve Reifman has just begun and I will definitely be adding each book in the Chase Against Time series to my own classroom library. Check out his other books. He too, is a teacher and has a great book on teaching.

Chase Manning, a fifth grade student at Apple Valley Elementary School, has hopes of being able to participate in the Sixth Grade Honors Orchestra next year. But the music program is in jeopardy because of budget cuts. So they're having an auction to raise funds. It seems like the perfect solution ~ until the cello they're auctioning off goes missing on the day of the auction.

In Chase Against Time, author Steve Reifman follows Chase through one full day of school as he tries to find out who stole the cello. He has to confront two bullies, and several friends and teachers as he tries to find the cello before the end of the school day. And at the same time, he needs to practice for his Honors Orchestra audition that is scheduled for that afternoon. The story moves along at a quick pace as we wait to see if Chase can succeed before time runs out.

All of the kids and teachers in this book are pretty believable. Chase is a sincere character that I think elementary aged kids can relate to, especially kids who are interested in music. And the story will keep the attention of any kids who enjoy mysteries. I'll definitely be passing this one along to my second grader.

Chase Against Time is an AR level 5.2 book and a level Q on the Fountas and Pinnell scale. While it's a mystery, there isn't any violence, or anything scary or disagreeable, in my opinion, about the story. It's an engaging book that seems like a great start to the Chase Manning Mystery series.

Chase has been in orchestra since the 4th grade. Chase and his good friend Jenny are hoping for a spot in the Sixth Grade Honors Orchestra. The honors orchestra gets to travel to different performances, complete in state music championships and best of all they get to wear really cool jackets. As it stands, Mrs. Washington and her committee don't just let anyone into this group, they have to earn it.

There is another issue lurking in the shadows that can keep Chase from his goal. If the cello on display doesn't' raise enough money at the auction, the school won't have the budget for next year. But when the cello is stolen, Chase has until 3 p.m. to find it or at least who took it.

This is an excellent story for young readers. Kids will be able to connect with these characters. Readers will quickly turn the pages to see the mystery unfold. The topic is also very important, especially since schools face loosing good programs and funding due to the economy and budgets.

Chase Against Time is due out on March 15th and will be available for pre-sale shortly on stevereifman.com, and all major online booksellers."

Steve moves into the role of fiction writer, penning an action-packed thriller that is sure to excite tweens with a real-time compelling story that harkens memories of Jack Bauer and 24.

Recently released by Brown Books Chase Against Time puts fifth grade hero Chase Manning up against all odds, as he tries to recover a prized cello in time to save Apple Valley's music program. Chase faces numerous twists, turns, and surprises along the way as the mystery develops, all within one day.

If you're anything like me, you will be looking for some great new current materials to stock your classroom libraries with this summer. I'm the father of 9 year old twins, one boy and one girl, and they both devoured the book CHASE AGAINST TIME. They have very different tastes in these matters, so it was very unusual to watch them both embrace the same book. My son tends to like punchy action stories -- and my daughter responds more to things that involve relationships. The book seemed to contain enough of both elements to keep the two of them happy. In my son's own words, it was, "Very exciting. I wanted to keep reading it. The characters have different personalities that make it interesting." From my daughter, "Enjoyable cliffhangers. It was full of mystery. And the characters have a sense of humor." Both kids could not stop reading this book. So after carefully consulting my own in-house focus group, I'm writing to recommend CHASE AGAINST TIME for your kids, whether they be boy or girl.
