Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-Chase Manning is hoping to make the Sixth Grade Honors Orchestra next year and tryouts are today. The only problem is that there might not be an Honors Orchestra if the school can't raise enough money by auctioning off an expensive cello at the annual fundraising dinner. When the instrument goes missing, the principal turns to Chase to find the guilty party. Who would want to sabotage the music program? The fact that the story takes place in the course of one day gives a sense of urgency to each chapter as Chase follows the clues to the culprit. The characters and situations are not wholly believable, and the supporting characters lack depth, but kids who have graduated from Scooby-Doo will like Chase's perseverance. A fun mystery with a likable main character and a lot of red herrings.-Terry Ann Lawler, Phoenix Public Library, AZα(c) Copyright 2011. Think "24" for kids. This mystery is set within the constraints of a 24 hour time period and creates suspense the whole way through. As a teacher myself, I will say, kids will be immediately taken to this. A number of kids in my own classroom have read it and read it again. They won't put it down! Steve Reifman has just begun and I will definitely be adding each book in the Chase Against Time series to my own classroom library. Check out his other books. He too, is a teacher and has a great book on teaching.

This thrilling school day tale is a roller-coaster novel, right to the finish. With all of it's incredible plot twists and intense characters, anyone of any age will be mobbing the closest book store (or Amazon) to get the next installment. Truly a great novel!

A Kid's Review on November 4, 2009
Format: Paperback
This book is super! It is like a real life problem, and has a really surprising ending. I think kids who like mysteries would really enjoy this fantastic tale. I am 9 1/2 years old, almost 10, and I really enjoyed it! I read it about a month ago, and it was great! I devoured it all in 1 day. And I still wanted more! It is about a boy named Chase, and something happens that could ruin the school's music program, and he's always wanted to be in it. I won't tell you exactly what happened, because then it will ruin the whole book for whoever is reading this review. Anyway, it's a great book, and I think kids about 8-12 years old will like it. The author came to my school, and he told us about how his book was made. You should really read it!

I read "Chase Against Time" with my children. We all had a hard time putting it down in the evening. Then we'd have to pinky swear no one would peek at the next few pages before our next reading. I loved that my kids enjoyed the book so much. And I loved that I enjoyed it just as much. Not only were we able to talk about the mystery, we were also able to talk about character, relationships, etc. Terrific family read...and totally awesome book for kids.

Storytelling has been, is, and always will be the way to expand young minds. Reifman has done a great job thrilling the reader with a fast-paced, captivating "whodunit" at the same time he creates an essential moral center. Entertain 'em and educate 'em all at the same time. J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter re-ignited the notion that kids will read. Books like "Chase" will keep passing the torch.

We bought this book because the author had visited my son's school and he got excited about it. Then he read the book and LOVED it. He is actually reading it again now. I hope the author writes more similar books. Thank you!

This is an exciting mystery middle grade kids will love. Since the author is a teacher he obviously knows plenty about kids and schools so it's realistic, too. The tension is increased because of the time limitation: Chase has to find the missing cello before the assembly or the music program he loves will be eliminated and he'll never reach his goal of playing in the Honors Orchestra next year. As a teacher (and kid at heart) I recommend the book highly.
