I really enjoyed Jan Neuahrth's first novel The Hunt, but I LOVED The Chase! The characters are so true to life, I really felt I could relate to them, especially Kendall. And Neuharth really knows how to build suspense. It's been awhile since I read this. The only things that stand out: the horse rescue in the beginning & that spoiled, whiney kid. I think there are several rich, spoiled, whiney kids. If you're not a horse person I wouldn't bother. If your are one it might be worth a read. There are much better books out there: Rita Mae Brown's Outfoxed series, Jody Jaffe, Dick Francis...

And Neuharth really knows how to build suspense. The book isn't short but the story moves along quickly and I kept telling myself I'd just read "one more chapter" . . . and ended up reading the entire book in a day. The ending doesn't hint at a sequel the way the ending in The Hunt did, but I hope she has another book on the way.

Loved this book !!!! Picked it up and couldn't put it down...full of twists and turns and the color of the Virginia fox hunting country. Great characters and vivid locales.
Surprise ending made me eager for another book from this author. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true literary talent of the Mystery/Suspense genre., November 5, 2006
This review is from: The Chase: A Hunt Country Suspense Novel (Hardcover)
Someone is out to get wealthy lawyer and handsome horseman Doug Cummings who barely escapes death from a suspicious vehicle accident. Set in the elite trophy town and foxhunting community of Middleburg, Virginia, "The Chase" is a riveting novel of suspense and intrigue, greed and revenge, loyalty and love - all against a background of an old-money community sharing the colorful lifestyle of the `horsey set'. Author Jan Neuharth's demonstrates a true mastery of the genre with her original and engaging story so well and wonderfully enhanced with memorable characters and unexpected plot twists. A thoroughly entertaining read for mystery buffs, and a welcome addition to community library collections. Also highly recommended is Jan Neuharth's early debut novel "The Hunt", which first established her as a true literary talent of the Mystery/Suspense genre.

The demanding 'crotch fruit' just ruined it for me.

I read "Hunt" and enjoyed it. I love Middleburg, VA and know the setting:
beautiful, rolling hills, a charming town and amazing estates. Unfortunately, this sequel is so poorly written/edited that I actually, and I have NEVER done this before, took out a pen and crossed out redundant wording and lame dialogue and in some cases re-wrote conversations just so I wouldn't scream! Yes, it would have been easier to throw it out, but after a while it became a challenge although a middle school aged child could have done as much and made it a better read. I was still marginally interested in the main characters having liked them in the first book (which would only qualify as 'good' in the writing department however suspenseful in its plot.)I just kept wondering, "did no one read this before it was published? Does the author not have friends who will tell her the truth about her writing?" I am surprised that others have rated this book so highly...I can only assume they have not read as many well-written books as I have had the good fortune to do or that they are friends of the author. Unless you like the feeling of linguistic frustration, really, don't bother with this one.
