One of the worst historicals I've ever tried to read,
By VA reader (Washington DC area) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chase the Wind (Hardcover)
I had never read any of Janelle Taylor's books, but I was curious about them because I knew she had lots of fans out there. This book, which featured an adventure/romance between government agents Navarro Breed and Elizabeth Lawrence (aka Bethany wind), simply fell flat. I couldn't even finish it. For me, the dialogue killed this novel. At the beginning, the reader was given stilted lectures on the history of the native American uprisings in the 1880s. This information was interesting, but could have been worked into the story more gracefully. Then the characters' speech to each other just didn't ring true. They sounded too modern and almost wooden - rather like the dialogue in a bad TV movie. I didn't sense any chemistry between the main characters and their attachment to one another didn't feel real. I may give Janelle Taylor another chance, but this book is certainly one to avoid!

Great plot,

To me this story carried a dynamite plot. I appreciated the changes in Ms. Taylors writing this story. Two special agents teamed up for a mission in the wild west. Interesting and fun at times. I enjoyed this book. The romance was tender and special. Good Book.

Good plot but dialogue was a disaster.,

This was the worst romance novel I've read so far. Since the plot was decent I wanted to give the book to one of my favorite authors to rewrite. The dialogue was extremely poor. Since this was only my 2nd book by this author I"m not sure I want to read another one by her. Really painful to read.

Every hero deserves his perfect match,
This review is from: Chase The Wind (Western Wind) (Kindle Edition)
When I read FOLLOW THE WIND, I couldn't decide which man I wanted Jessie to marry, as I loved Matt and Navarro. But Ms. Taylor chose the right man for the right reasons. I was so happy she did a sequel so Navarro could find the heroine he was meant to have. I enjoyed and learned a lot about Geronimo's/the Apache uprising of 1886. These two were equals in all ways. Hope she'll write another in this series.

More of a history lesson than a romance, and the dialogue was awful,
By Gemma "bookworm" (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chase The Wind (Paperback)
From the back cover:
Born of an Apache mother, trained in Apache ways, undercover agent Navarro Breed embarks on a perilous mission to save Geronimo and his people. Seeking her own brand of justice against the gun-running desperadoes who killed her husband, Bethany Wind agrees to masquerade as Navarro's wife. It is a journey that will take them from the Arizona Territory to a sprawling Texas ranch--and the home of the woman Navarro once loved. And t is a journey that will take them from danger to awakening desire--and the love that is their extraordinary destiny... In CHASE THE WIND, Janelle Taylor has created an incomparable love story of two people who must battle the pain of the past to seize a radiant future. Set against the sweeping panorama of authentic western history, brimming with sensual passion and intrigue, it is the work of a master storyteller at her spellbinding best. And my review: Janelle Taylor has a lot of fans, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. But if this is all she has to offer, I'll be avoiding her books in the future. The first chapter is nothing but dry, boring, history told in long stilted speeches by two characters. There was nothing to "hook" the reader, no urgency, no emotional connection to the characters, nothing that would keep a reader eagerly turning the pages. If I wanted to read history, I'd buy a textbook. A lot of it felt very preachy. Yes, I agree that the way Native Americans were treated was very badly done, but I don't like to be preached about it--rhetoric gets old fast. And as other reviewers have said, the dialogue was awful! Who talks like that? They were always breaking into big rambling speeches. The dialogue reminded me a lot of Fern Michaels--that can be praise or criticism, depending on how you feel about her writing. I couldn't even get to chapter three, that's how bad this was. I've tried Janelle Taylor before, and have yet to find any of her books finishable. Not recommended by this reader. |
