3.0 out of 5 stars Good story but a little too dark
Ms. French seems to enjoy writing books in this genre. I just finished reading Wayne's Dead which was a story I found to be a bit on the 'severe' side, that is to say, until, I finished reading her, Chasing Demons. I usually enjoy a good thriller but not when the writer takes the storyline overboard. Not only was the storyline a bit overdone, but more attention should...

Ms French delivers yet another gem for her rapidly growing list of fans to devour. CHASING DEMONS is a fast-paced, smooth read that I found fascinating and impossible to put down. It does what good fiction should do; entertain the reader from beginning to end.

Kendra Salvatori is married to the boss of a small crime organization. After years of enduring Tony's brutality, she manages to escape. The parallel stories that materialize are perfectly blended. The gritty, violent side of organized crime is shown by Tony's determination to find Kendra by any means possible. On the flip side, the reader follows Kendra's will to survive and to explore the new, gentle relationship with the man who saved her life. The reader can easily feel many emotions due to strong character development and the unique writing style of the author. This one has it all; mystery, suspense, romance, and a creative plot.

I challenge any reader to try to put this book down once they start to read it. The action and drama build until the exhilarating conclusion that left me breathless. Outstanding job Ms French. I eagerly anticipate your next book. You are setting the bar very high for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Kind of Romantic Suspense, April 17, 2004
By
This review is from: Chasing Demons (Paperback)
Since there are several descriptions, I'll skip that part. The climax to "Chasing Demons", when Tony locates Kendra and forces her to leave with him, where Garth is tracking them and finally finds them, where Vincent is doing his own kind of tracking, were so suspenseful, I found myself holding my breath and reading as fast as I could. The story building to the climax is wonderful - a love story between two people who are chasing their own demons.

I didn't know what chasing demons meant until my aunt, who lives in the South, explaned it to me: nightmares about traumatic events in your life. I love this title.

Wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Action-Packed Romantic Suspense!, September 21, 2003
This review is from: Chasing Demons (Paperback)
I read this author's first two novels and have been on the lookout for more from her, so soon as I read she had another book coming out, I pre-ordered it directly from her publisher. You never know what to expect from French. Her first book was a romantic comedy with a smidgeon of suspense, her second was a psychological thriller, and now, "Chasing Demons", which is romantic suspense packed with action.

This is a great book. Filled with characters you love and those you hate. Tony Salvatori is evil personified and his wife Kendra is his direct opposite - a woman of quiet resolve and faith. Garth Fisher is a man who is trying to come to terms with a past mistake and makes a commitment to himself to protect Kendra from her vicious husband, who goes on the rampage as he tries to find her. Vinnie is a cold-hearted killer who, feeling sympathy for Kendra, helps her escape from her abusive husband and does his best to try to keep Tony from finding her.

I could not put this book down. As usual, French writes in a concise, fast-paced way. The last chapters are suspense-filled and action packed. Great book by an author I love to read. I wonder what's next?

5.0 out of 5 stars Chasing Demons is Right!, October 2, 2003
By
This review is from: Chasing Demons (Paperback)
I became a fan of this author after reading her first two novels, and as soon as I knew this book was available, ordered it. Once more, Ms. French has switched genres - she's gone from romantic comedy to psychological thriller to romantic suspense without missing a beat.

Kendra Salvatori has her own demon to contend with: her powerful and very violent husband, while Garth Fisher is dealing with his own demon: himself. Garth is living alone on a mountain in North Carolina trying to come to grips with a past mistake when Kendra steps into his life, literally fleeing from her husband. Garth is drawn to Kendra's inner strength and serene manner while Kendra is drawn to Garth's gentle, caring nature. Through their love for one another, both face their demons with courage and a fierce passion to remain together.

This is a great read, full of excitement, action, and suspense that will leave you anxiously turning pages. The author continues to deliver the story at a fast pace, with characters with depth and realistic dialogue.

Wish there were more books by this author. I'm already waiting for the next one, curious as to which genre she'll write!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another high quality excellent read from a talented author, October 9, 2003
This review is from: Chasing Demons (Paperback)
Bravo, Ms. French, for another high quality precisely paced read. Chasing Demons is superb reading entertainment at its best. This story line of fate tainted by the stench of evil is jet propelled with richly deft and supple writing.

The story is one of danger, passion and soul as the abused wife of the mightiest Southeast kingpin, Tony Salvatori, loses her unborn child at her husband's hand. Kendra (Angel Salvatori) finds trust, safety and her own inner strength through new relationships. Escaping to a barn located in the hills of Black Mountain, North Carolina, Kendra falls into the safe and loving care of a man named Garth. Unsure of what to do with the discovery in his barn, Garth calls his friend Thad, a nurse practitioner, to help determine the next step and with this the fascinating story begins to unfold. An impressive assemble of keenly developed characters draws you in and refuses to let you go.

Chasing Demons demonstrates the superior range of this talented author. Upon reaching the last page of this vividly powerful novel you will immediately find yourself wanting to revisit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Book, June 26, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Chasing Demons (Paperback)
"Chasing Demons" portrays one woman's transformation from an abused woman to a woman ready to face her demons and willing to die for the man she loves. Kendra, wife to crime boss Tony Salvatori, manages to escape his hold and ends up in Black Mountain, NC near death. Garth Fisher is a former hostage negotiator living as a recluse. When he finds Kendra in his barn, bleeding, he rescues her and, with the help of nurse practitioner Thad, helps her to recover. The love that blooms between Kendra and Garth is sensitive and heartwarming.

Parallel to the story is Tony's maddened attempts to locate his wife, never realizing that the one man he trusts is the man who is trying to keep him away from her and who holds her interests at heart. When Tony finds Kendra, the action flies and the suspense builds to a thrilling climax.

Exceptional characters, plot, and dialogue. This is a thrilling book and one I did not want to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rare 5-Star, July 1, 2005
This review is from: Chasing Demons (Paperback)
I read quite a number of thrillers, some with a touch of romance while some were straight suspense by different famous writiers. Glad to say FRENCH's Chasing Demons is one of the best written books I've ever read. Her writing is tight; the storyline flows making the read so pleasant and smooth. I also liked it she has short chapters giving us enough detail to bring us scene after scene without sacrificing richness of the story. (Writers who like to overload with details or unnecessary verbage should consider learning from her.)

I enjoyed this book so much that I am seeking for other of her books. Those who love fast-faced thrillers should not miss this one. It is also a page-turner too.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5+ Stars, April 11, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Chasing Demons (Paperback)
Kendra Salvatori is a woman with great inner strength who has lived a life of trauma and abuse, first with her father, than her mobster husband, Tony. Kendra finally finds a way to escape her husband's dominance and practically falls into the arms of Garth Fisher, a former hostage negotiator who is living in seclusion, blaming himself for the death of a woman taken hostage. Garth, perhaps subconsiously seeking redemption, nurses Kendra back to health, then insists she remain with him, on top of a mountain which is practically inaccessible during the winter. Both know that eventually Tony will find his wife and will force her to return to his home. Both vow not to let this happen.

The chapters where Tony has found Kendra and forcefully taken her away from Garth are some of the most suspenseful I've ever read.

The pace is fast, the characters realistic and believable, the setting perfect. Treat yourself to a good book and read this one. The action and suspense are incredible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic Suspense With an Inspirational Flavor, September 13, 2003
This review is from: Chasing Demons (Paperback)
I was offered the privilege of reading the advance copy of "Chasing Demons" and grabbed it. The book deals with spousal abuse in a very real way and it's inspiring to "watch" Kendra change from a woman who has been subjugated by her husband to a woman who is strong mentally and physically and ready to take a stand against him in order to gain her own personal freedom.

Kendra's husband, Tony Salvatori,is evil to the point of madness. I love the bad guy Vincent, a hardened criminal who has a soft spot for Kendra. Garth Fisher is a man seeking redemption for a past mistake, which initially motivates him to protect Kendra. The love between Garth and Kendra heals the wounds both have been harboring and is beautifully depicted.

If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would. A wonderfully inspiring book.
