Book Description

NY Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author Bob Mayer

Covert operative Horace Chase has been chasing ghosts his entire life.
First, his Medal-of-Honor winner father who died in Vietnam without ever meeting his son. And left him the legacy of an automatic appointment to the Military Academy at West Point which shaped the next thirty-five years of Chase's life. Then, the ghost of his mother, who died while he was at war in Afghanistan and wounded, causing him to resign his commission and return to the United States, a lost soul.

Chase now wears two hats as a Federal counter-terrorism liaison to the local police department in Boulder, Colorado where he becomes embroiled in two seemingly un-related cases. Working as a detective with Boulder PD he chases another death, this one the apparent rape/murder of Rachel Stevens, an upscale housewife attending night classes at the University of Colorado. And with his counter-terrorism team he is embroiled in a series of killings involving a militia group, a rogue ex-Special Forces officer, a psychopathic ex-CIA contract mercenary, and ruthless drug runners.

From the streets of Boulder, to the highest railroad tunnel in the world, to a swingers club hiding in plain site in suburbia, Afghanistan starts to look pretty good to Chase.

About the Author

NY Times bestselling author Bob Mayer has had over 50 books published. He has sold over four million books, and is in demand as a team-building, life-changing, and leadership speaker and consultant for his Who Dares Wins: The Green Beret Way concept. He is also the Co-Creator of Cool Gus Publishing.

Bob Mayer grew up in the Bronx. After high school, he entered West Point where he learned about the history of our military and our country. During his four years at the Academy and later in the Infantry, Mayer questioned the idea of "mission over men." When he volunteered and passed selection for the Special Forces as a Green Beret, he felt more at ease where the men were more important than the mission.
Mayer's obsession with mythology and his vast knowledge of the military and Special Forces, mixed with his strong desire to learn from history, is the foundation for his science fiction series Atlantis, Area 51 and Psychic Warrior. Mayer is a master at blending elements of truth into all of his thrillers, leaving the reader questioning what is real and what isn't.

He took this same passion and created thrillers based in fact and riddled with possibilities. His unique background in the Special Forces gives the reader a sense of authenticity and creates a reality that makes the reader wonder where fact ends and fiction begins.

In his historical fiction novels, Mayer blends actual events with fictional characters. He doesn't change history, but instead changes how history came into being.
Mayer's military background, coupled with his deep desire to understand the past and how it affects our future, gives his writing a rich flavor not to be missed.

Bob has presented for over a thousand organizations both in the United States and internationally, including keynote presentations, all day workshops, and multi-day seminars. For more information see bobmayer.org and coolgus.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging Novel February 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a complex story, and it was fascinating to see it develop. It is a mystery/thriller, but not just that; there's a boatload of excellent writing going on here, leading the reader through paths and concepts which just aren't expected in an everyday thriller. The characters are wonderfully developed and flawed but don't become caricatured by their flaws. When I got to the end of the book, I felt as if I'd been surfing an avalanche and survived. This is one of the best books I've read recently.

3.0 out of 5 stars mixed review January 4, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is the first book I've read written by Bob Mayer. I might read more if this becomes a series. Horace Chase is a federal liaison with the Boulder Police Department. He is investigating a murder but also involved in a black ops assignment involving a militia group. I found the flawed characters interesting. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the story, but I felt the ending was too contrived. However, I would be willing to try another Bob Mayer novel. I received a copy of this in exchange for my review.

The story line isn't actually that bad. It almost reads like a Jack Reacher story but with a little less action. A good "who dunit". Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great
Sniper rifles are bolt action at 7.62. Would never have fired a ranging shot when tangles were coming- sound carries. Convoluted.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK book.
This book was a good read, even if it wasn't what I was expecting. I thought it was another black ops style book, but it's more of a mystery/murder investigation style book. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Chasing the Ghost
The story line was OK, but the writing needed some editing. I did not feel the title and concept was very well explored.
