A southern man full of soul sings to his wife.....,
This review is from: Chasing Mississippi (Audio CD)
Simply put, this album is great! Dave Barnes is a talented singer/songwriter and this time out he writes of his recently wed wife and their relationship (except for the break up song). Dave sounds very comfortably as he moves through these songs. His sound this time is less based around his acoustic guitar (although it is there) but more the musicians that play with him. Chasing Mississippi comes away with more of this funky blues rock feel to it; however, it still feels like Dave Barnes. This album feels more like a next step him I think. The quality of the production itself is very good. It doesn't feel like an independent record at all. Ed Cash did a good job producing this one for Dave. If you like singer/songwriters, soulful singers, or just good music then check this album out. Then after that check out his other album.

Dave Barnes should be famous. In circles, he is...his fans are legion in Nashville, and Vince Gill & Amy Grant lend their talents to this album. Bonnie Raitt approached him in a coffeehouse once to praise his work. Barnes has the songwriting chops and performing ability of someone with twice his years of experience. Chasing Mississippi is an amazingly polished blend of modern pop, late 70s/early 80s blue-eyed soul, and hints of country influence. "Stay Away" and comes off like a Hall & Oates classic, "Jackson" is a slow, sad bluesy-country lament, "All That Noise" and "Greyhound" are hand-clapping gospel-flavored stomps, and the rest of the album is full of great music. Highly recommended, and look for his other releases as well.

This CD would be right at home with late 70's-early 80's pop/rock (Kenny Loggins, Eagles)...very well-crafted with excellent musicianship...my favorite tunes are "Everybody Knows But You", "Jackson" (with harmony vocals from Vince Gill), "Sounds Like Me".

This is definitely a FAVORITE in my music collection and I have a lot! Dave's music is fun and original. A must have for any music lover! I highly recommend buying "Chasing Mississippi!" If you haven't seen him in concert you should! He's even better live and absolutely hilarious. His new cd is coming out April 1 and I'm sure it will be just as good as "Brother Bring The Sun" and "Chasing Mississippi," if not better!

John Mayer highly recommended Dave Barnes on his website blog and I can surely say John was right. His CD is upbeat and catchy and the slower tunes with Vince Gill and Amy Grant are heartfelt. I have turned so many people on to this talented singer. Just waiting for him to come to CT - maybe he should open up for John Mayer!!! Just a thought !

I'm a huge Dave fan and think this is one of the most diverse & soulful albums he's put it out. I love the southern bluesy feel to it, and his ability as a singer-songwriter is INCREDIBLE. He's an all-around incredible guy too, which is always a plus. Not just talented, but truly a good man too. If you haven't had the chance to dig into Dave's music yet, I'd encourage you to try it. He's been one of my favorite music finds in the last 5 years, definitely in the top three of my favorite artists of all time. :)

I bought this album a few months ago having never before heard of Dave Barnes -- I'm glad I did. This is an amazing collection of music that is good to listen to from beginning to end. A Lot Like Me and Greyhound are a couple of favorites, but every song is good. Buy it - you won't regret it.

Dave Barnes is AWESOME.,
This review is from: Chasing Mississippi (Audio CD)
Dave Barnes is probably one of the nicest, most hysterical and humble musicians that I've ever met. I've seen him in concert four times, and each and every time we've taken pictures, talked backstage and got to hang out for a little while. He's almost as amazing on his CDs as he is live- I highly recommend anyone and everyone to buy not only Chasing Mississippi, but "Brother, Bring the Sun" --because it's incredible, too. Support him, he's an amazing guy :)
-Also, if you ever have to chance to see him live, go do it. Go, and see. Immediately. -Check out Matt Wertz, Marc Broussard and the Gabe Dixon Band too :) |
