Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I have invited ME ( my bigmouth conscience) to sit at my shoulder and oversee the writing of this memoir. After all, it has been easy for many a memoirist to stretch the truth. However, please  believe US, this life has been so interesting and at times almost unbelievable, that there was no need to get "creative" in telling about it.

Helene Hanff said, "I never can get interested in things that didn't happened to people who never lived." She'd love the amount of living in this book. CHASING THE MUSE is not only poignant memoir, legacy writing and personal history, it's also an introduction to the entertainment industry's greats, spanning 50 years. Gene Hull's intimate knowledge of the Big Band era and his personal observations reflect a Golden Era of music and culture that's important and energizing.

~ Leona DeRosa Bodie, Vice President of the Florida Writers Association and Award-winning author of the thriller SHADOW CAY, and several children's book's including ONE IS FUN and SKATING for TWO, and contributor to THE DIAMOND PROJECT.

CHASING THE MUSE is a delightful book of behind-the-scenes experiences in the Big Band era-- a time which shouldn't be forgotten. With first-hand knowledge as a professional musician, conductor and producer in the music industry, the author tells a personal, often humorous, story set in times spanning the years of his outstanding career in the music world.

Format: Paperback
What a delight to read! What a life he lived! The "read" is memoir Chasing the Muse. "He" is author-musician Gene Hull. From the amusing choice of epigraphs that begin the book, through the final showbiz photographs (one features Hull dancing with Joey Hetherton at the Sahara in Las Vegas) that end it, I found myself captivated and mesmerized. I loved Hull's choice of quirky anecdotes that reveal the inner workings of entertainment greats (we're talking the caliber of Duke Ellington, Leonard Bernstein, Katherine Hepburn), stars that Hull either performed with or met during the course of his extensive and colorful career. His writing is witty and humorous, with twists and surprises that made me eager to turn page after page. Of particular interest is the enlightening way he sketches growing pains and ultimate success of the big band he founded and directed, The Jazz Giants. He also shares stories about his musical parents who inspired him, his wife who put up with him, and his sons who carry on the musical adventure. Chasing the Muse is the perfect book for anyone fascinated by music and the performing arts.

Memorable Musical Memoir, July 16, 2011
By
Mac Mahr

Will Rogers said, "When you put in good things you didn't do, and leave out the bad things you did, that's a memoir." Fortunately, in the case of CHASING THE MUSE, which won the Florida Writers Association Literary prize for memoir, Gene Hull describes how Katherine Hepburn scolded him; Duke Ellington hired him; Elvis greeted him; Benny Goodman Inspired him; Leonard Bernstein thanked him as we all thank him for taking readers along on this well-crafted and entertaining musical tour de force. Highly recommended.

Malcolm Mahr is the author of seven books, including THE RIYADH CONSPIRACY; THE SECRET DIARY OF MARCO POLO; THE MYSTERY OF DAVINCI'S MONNA VANNA; MURDER AT PARADISE SPA; YOU'RE RETIRED NOW. RELAX; WHAT MAKES A MARRIAGE WORK; MURDER AT PARADISE SPA.

Gene Hull's "Chasing the Muse" is an entertaining, humorous, and poignant story of his life and musical career. Growing up in a musical family, he was a member of and led various big bands, culminating in a performance at the Newport Jazz festival. His stories about many of the show business luminaries he met along the way add to this enjoyable read. Highly recommended.
