Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Jason and Rachel, teens who entered Lyrian by chance in A World without Heroes (2011) and stayed to fight for its inhabitants’ freedom from the emperor in Seeds of Rebellion (2012), now risk their lives to fulfill the prophecy that offers the only gleam of hope. Those who enjoyed the many action scenes in the previous books will find plenty here as well, though the characters also spend a good deal of time in reflection and conversation. The question of whether to trust the prophecy looms large. While this volume concludes the Beyonders series, Mull leaves the door open for another series set in Lyrian. Grades 5-8. --Carolyn Phelan --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I haven't written a review in a while. In fact, when I look back on my reviews, they make me want to gag because they're so badly written. But that's besides the point--I couldn't NOT write a review for this book. I just...couldn't.

I bought A World Without Heroes the very day it came out. I bought Seeds of Rebellion the very day it came out. So it should come as no surprise that I bought this book the day it came out, and finished it that day too. And now it's been a week. And I've been spinning this book and this review and this series over and over in my head, and I can't not write a review. So, without further ado--

First things first: this book is DARK. Like, freakishly dark. As in, Mull probably could've--SHOULD'VE--gotten away with making his characters more like 17 or 18 than 13. (13!?) This book was definitely more Young Adult than Middle Grade. I felt that about the first two books as well, so it should come as no surprise that this book was essentially a punch in the gut emotionally. We go into the dang book knowing that--what was the phrasing--"the road to victory is paved with the blood of heroes"? We KNOW that.

About 40% in, I got really afraid Mull wouldn't kill any of my favorite characters. I had gone into this expecting some heavy-hitting, and I truly began to fear that we'd have lots of dead drinling spear-holders, but no one who we truly CARED about. I was wrong. Yeah. Lots of characters--BELOVED characters--are going to die. :(

But it doesn't make the characters growth and death and relationships less real or painful.

And ugh, the characters--Nedwin! Ferrin! (ah, Ferrin...) Tark, Rachel (Rachel!) Jason, Galloran, Drake--Jasher--Farfalee--Aram!! They are SO real.

I liked the whole series. This book especially. Closure isn't always found in stories. It was very easy to get caught up in lyrian bc of the great characters. I'll be looking for more books by this author.

I'll start with the cons (not too much). The Beyonders series is not quite Fablehaven, but it is very good nonetheless. The characters in Fablehaven are much more stronger than the characters in Beyonders. There is a ridiculous amount of characters in the Beyonders series, and most of them don't have much of a personality, especially Jason and Rachel. They aren't strong main characters, but the large pool of secondary characters make up for them. Also, as is standard with medieval fantasies, the characters talk in a more sophisticated manner than in other books. This shows quality writing to me, but I guess it can seem a little overboard sometimes.

I think this is one of the best books I've read in awhile. I almost completely forgot what has happened in the previous two books... Yet it didn't matter. The story is very gripping, and Brandon Mull has created an entire universe comparable to Lord of the Rings. The plot isn't necessarily original, but that doesn't matter. Brandon Mull has plenty of creativity and action in this series. Brandon Mull's writing is very high quality, this series is highly suggested.

Originally posted at FanLit:

Chasing the Prophecy is the final book in Brandon Mull's BEYONDERS series aimed at a middle grade audience. Jason and Rachel have joined a group of rebels who hope to take down the evil emperor Maldor. An oracle has told them that they have very little chance for success, but she's also told them exactly what they need to do to have that small chance. Therefore the group has split up into separate teams which hope to fulfill different parts of the oracle's instructions. Rachel is trying to muster up an army while working on her magic and Jason's team visits a library (I loved the library!) to try to find the location of an ancient seer who has information they need. Both kids face hard work, difficult decisions, and life-threatening circumstances. Each must be willing to bend a lot to accomplish their goals.

Readers who've enjoyed the first two BEYONDERS books, A World Without Heroes and Seeds of Rebellion will almost certainly be pleased with the conclusions of Brandon Mull's story. Jason and Rachel are maturing rapidly and learning how to be heroes. I like that the kids respect the skills and wisdom of their elders but have a healthy enough dose of skepticism and self-confidence that they're willing to respectfully question and advise the adults. Mull's adults aren't stupid (like we see in many children's fantasy novels) -- they're partners who work with the kids to accomplish goals. They don't talk down to the kids or sugar-coat scary situations. They tell the kids the truth, even when it's painful, and they work with the kids to come up with viable solutions to their problems. It's a good portrayal of healthy adult-child relationships.
