Chris' playing, along with Gar Samuelson's, is the most underrated aspect of Megadeth. This album is far from the speed metal of "Peace Sells..." or Chris' first solo album because it features Chris playing a variety of different styles from the funky "Hip Hop Karma" to the Spanish flare on "Salvador." His picking is clean, fast and precise, sort of like Eric Johnson, making the whole album smooth. The only problem I have with it is that it really is a slew of demos that Chris recorded over the years, so it doesn't exactly have the flow of his first solo album (ie: a theme that flows through the entirety of the album). The sound quality is excellent, however, so you're not just getting a bunch of tunes Chris put together in his garage on a Sony "my frist boombox." If you're familiar with his previous work, this could open the doors to new exciting things, but obviously, if you're a fan of top notch solo guitar, you already know this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great instrumentals..., July 25, 2000

Chris Poland is a truly underrated talent. His fluid guitar solos are incredible, and his playing on the 'Chasing the Sun' CD is a great example for any aspiring guitarist. I really dug his work in Damn the Machine and Megadeth, not to mention his last CD 'Return To Metalopolis'. This new CD bridges the gap between his heavy metal past and his new band Ohm, which is a jazz fusion trio. (Be on the lookout for Ohm! )

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Unique, February 14, 2007
This review is from: Chasing the Sun (Audio CD)
I have never written a review on Amazon before but I am so impressed with this work by Chris Poland that I felt compelled to do so. I wasn't crazy about his other solo cd's. I do think his work with OHM is excellent. But "Chasing the Sun" is uniquely different! I own numerous works by Steve Morse, Joe Satriani and Jeff Kollman, to name just a few. Chasing the Sun is wholly different from these other stylists. It dislays uniquely different artistry. The songs are creative and expressive and Chris Poland's playing is superb! This is one of my absolute favorite cd's. I wish he would release another cd along the same lines. If you appreciate instrumental guitar, I HIGHLY recommend this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, September 7, 2005
This review is from: Chasing the Sun (Audio CD)
I personally think this is one of Chris Poland's best works. It's an album that you can listen to straight through. The fact that it is instrumental should not deter listeners - Poland's guitar leads are so searing that they create their own vocals. A must have for guitar enthusiasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chris Poland Rules, August 17, 2002

This is a great album. I think Chris Poland is a brilliant guitarist and is horribly overlooked and under-rated. My favorite songs on this album are Chasing the sun, Robo Stomp, and Wendells place. If you want to hear great guitar playing check this album out. Also be on the look out for OHM, they rule.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unknown jazz fusion masterpiece, March 19, 2002
By
This review is from: Chasing the Sun (Audio CD)
First with Megadeth, with melodic bendy singing legato solos that really stand out against the bluesy lick-driven (or clueless whammy wanking) of most metal band solos. Then Metalopolis, which is both chunky and melodic. (My roomates at the time were sure it was Eric Johnson album with a metal band.) Then Damn the Machine, which I was fortnate enough to see live... prog-metal, I guess, though heavier on the prog and lighter on the metal.

Now this. Whoa, jazz fusion metal? Huh? But great! At times he sounds like Eric Johnson or Carlos Santana, tone-wise, but really, he has a distinctive style of his own, which not too many guitarists have. He doesn't sound like Allan Holdsworth, Joe Satriani, or Steve Vai, but you know what I mean when I say that when you hear one of them you know who it is right away, and the same goes for Chris Poland. The benefit of this is shown on this album: he can change bands and play different styles from band to band and from solo album to solo album and it still sounds great.

5.0 out of 5 stars A master piece of music, January 30, 2002

I had first heard of Chris Poland through his time with Megadeth. His solos were so heavy, fast and mind blowing I had to hear more! So when I got this I was a bit surprised. It was more Jazz and Blues ryhtem then Poland first album "Return To Meatalopolis". So as I listened to it a secound time I really got into it! Poland is so original with his style of guitar playing. Creating a sort of Eric Clapton-Jeff Beck sound in his music. But somehow managing to make his musical sound all his own. Keeping you hooked till the end! After listing to his incredible guitar technique on this album it makes you wounder how come Poland never struck gold in the music bis after his Mega years. If you got the blues or like the funky sounds of jazz in your ears then grab this album!
