Hemby - playing his own compositions vs . . ., February 4, 2010

If you really like Hemby -- are partial to his own compositions -- then you will like this CD. While Hemby can be as 'food and drink' to me, I personally find a number of the pieces on this CD tiringly monotonous. Where I think Hemby really excels is in his arrangements of the music of other composers, particularly traditional (esp. Christmas) melodies. For example, abundant exquisite chord progressions et al are part and parcel of his "ACOUSTIC CHRISTMAS" CD. These are familiar tunes taken, for me, to the height of musical expression. On another CD, "CHRISTMAS TREASURES" (various artists) I have listened -- perhaps 100 times -- to Hemby perform "I'll be Home for Christmas." I never tire of it and am amazed and inspired by his arrangement of that piece.
