Book Description

8 and up3 and up
Miles at sea and no way to escape-

Rumors of missing Nazi treasure are rampant in Europe in the wake of World War II, and Denmark, home to twelve-year-old twins Peter and Elise Andersen, is no exception. Hoping to strike it rich, Peter, Elise, and their friend Henrik begin investigating the mysterious site of a recent sinking in Helsingor Harbor. But when the twins and Henrik discover they are not the only ones interested in the sunken ship, their sleuthing leads them into greater danger than they ever imagined!

A split-second decision lands the three on a renegade German submarine staffed by a crazy crew that refuses to admit defeat. Suddenly, Peter, Elise, and Henrik are the only witnesses to a plot to smuggle priceless treasures out from under the noses of the Allied victors!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-7. In this engaging fifth book in the Young Underground series, Peter, Elise, and Henrik are surprised to see Nazis still lurking in their hometown of Helsingx9a r, Denmark, weeks after the Germans have surrendered. These Nazis, the children discover, are retrieving treasure from a recently sunken ship. The children's sleuthing leads them into danger when they become trapped aboard one of the last remaining German U-boats. The author's firm narrative pacing and descriptive immediacy create a high level of suspense as he describes how a U.S. destroyer tracks and nearly sinks the submarine as it heads to South America. Ultimately, Peter and Henrik save the day after Peter miraculously manages to send a signal to the destroyer. Disappointingly, Elise is generally relegated to a supporting role, as she is in the other books in the series. She deserves more. In spite of that shortcoming, this historical thriller offers a vivid picture of the times, a high sense of adventure, and examples of young people who endure serious tests of their faith. 5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!, April 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Chasing the Wind (The Young Underground #5) (Book 5) (Paperback)
This book really points out how some people have a big problem with greed. It also tells you to mind your own business when it doesn't concern you. I think you should read this book. I also recommend that you read Into The Flames and A Way Across The Sea.
