Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds return with ‘Chasing Yesterday’, a great follow-up to their successful 2011 debut. And if you are reading this review, you are likely already aware that each member is saturated with years of musicianship and stage experience. They come together once again and deliver tracks that feel and sound like undiscovered treasures from the past. The album is slightly richer than their previous release which I love; others may not. Below is some brief commentary on my 5 favorite cuts as of now:

~“Riverman” – This opening number is nostalgically drenched with the pace of “Wonderwall” along with an 80s saxophone solo. It plays like a long time friend tapping you on the shoulder saying, “Remember back in the day? Let’s do it again!” I knew then and there ‘Chasing Yesterday’ would be great!

~“The Dying of the Light” – Poignant and grand, this may be my favorite song on the album. It’s one of those songs made for everyone to sing along at the concerts. Lyrics like, “We'll fight the dying of the light, we'll catch the sun” are irresistible.

~“The Right Stuff” – Mostly an instrumental, this is the sexiest song on the album…

~“The Mexican” – ….Ok, on 2nd thought, maybe this is the sexiest song…

~“While the Song Remains The Same” – The 60s rock rhythm hooked me, then I was reeled in by lyrics like “Hold that thought, don’t let me go/We can dance beneath the fireflies on an empty road.”

Here’s hoping you take flight with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and catch the sun! Four and a half stars (**** 1/2) for the 1st great rock CD of 2015!

This is a Great album which is obviously one of the top 10 in 2015. Noel delivers a genius album. Top to bottom the song writing and arrangements are excellent. If you are a fan of classic OASIS you will not be disappointed. Listen to Riverman, The Dying of the Light, Lock all the Doors or Ballad of the Mighty I for starters. Excellent Release which is highly recommended.

The “wisest man in rock”, according to a handful of UK music magazines, isn’t looking for success. He’s not looking for another number one album or climbing up the UK pop charts. He’s done that before, with one of the best bands Britain has ever seen, and even his first trek into solo-dom in 2011. It’s not his job or his place; ideally it is the job of the hundreds of other bands his songs have blossomed. So, where does that leave an aging brit rocker? It seems it leaves him to do whatever he wants.

Chasing Yesterday is what Gallagher sounds like with complete freedom. It’s an album with the sound of a 25 year old unibrowed Mancunian, but also the sound of a 50 year old West Londoner who still has a few clever tricks up his sleeve. The album begins with Riverman; a wofty folk song inspired by Brian Protheroe’s 1974 single “Pinball”, which slowly brings takes us into the depths of a Pink Floyd “Meddle” era guitar solo and leaves us showered in brass and saxaphone. Immediately, this album shows it won’t appease any Mancunian football hooligans who are “mad fer it”. Especially the Hotel California soundalike “The Girl With The X-Ray Eyes”, and the true ‘way-out there” moment, even for the usually conservative Noel, “The Right Stuff”, which sounds like walking into a smoky jazz club on a little acid and a lot of hash.

But, in the albums lead single, “In the Heat of the Moment”, the 20-years-in-the-making “Lock All The Doors”, the song Josh Homme wish he’d written, “The Mexican”, and the US FM radio pop rocker “You Know We Can’t Go Back”, it’s obvious Noel still likes to churn out good, old fashioned, melody-driven, no bulls*** rock and roll that can withstand the sensible boundaries of the record’s themes.

I must say when I first heard the singles I was divided I loved "In the heat of the moment" but just could not get into "The ballad of mighty I"

As I received the album my initial reaction upon the first couple of spins was kind of "meh... I guess Noel can do no wrong but this is just average"
My problem... I was waiting and looking for another "If I had a gun" (To me one of the best songs of the XXI century) as I forced myself to listen to the album some more times trying to forget about any reviews read or preconceived notions Noel's craftsmanship started to reveal itself.

The album itself does not contain another "If I had a gun", a five star song if I ever heard one (or 4.5 maybe) but it does contain some very consistent cuts like "In the heat of the moment", "The dying of the light", "The right stuff", "While the song remains the same", "River man", "Know you can't go back" and my favourite "The mexican" all being 4 star songs.
The rest even if not stellar are solid 3.5's

Noel's second album might not be the best of 2015 but it is certainly the one the has received the most spins on my behalf and comparing it to the previous one feels overall more fluid and consistent.

Amazing album Mr Gallagher.
