Best of the Series!, January 10, 2001
This review is from: Chastity (Dangerous Virtues) (Mass Market Paperback)
I always enjoy books by Elaine Barbieri and this one didn't disappoint me. I liked the way it didn't take the whole book for the main characters to admit they loved each other. The hero, Reed, was masculine, but able to express his feelings. If you like Elaine Barbieri, you'll like this one. She tied all the loose ends with the 3 sisters very neatly at the end.

Nothing special, December 19, 2005
This review is from: Chastity (Dangerous Virtues) (Mass Market Paperback)
I admit it - I'm a bit over the "wild west" romance genre. It's had its moments over the years, but basically I'm done with frontierswomen and the Men They Love. In my opinion, you can't go past Sandra Brown's early novels for a little wild west action.
But back to Chastity. I haven't read Purity or Honesty, but after reading Chastity I don't really feel the need to hunt them down. This book is fine, but the character development and the authors choice to scatter the readers attention to "bit players" in the book is a bit disconcerting and sometimes downright boring.
Examples:
The lead male character, Reed, leaves quite a bit to be desired. All we really know is that he lost a woman (she was mowed down by cattle) named Jenny, is impersonating a Reverend and decides to use sweet, innocent, red-haired Chastity to pretend to be his wife.
I also thought all of the character development on Conchita was wasted as she was shot by Morgan before she got her revenge...so why did we spend half the book reading about her? All that time with Morgan's Band of Merry Offsiders was a bit of a waste too.
I also didn't really buy exactly WHY Chastity would stay and assist Reed to get better when he was so awful to her. I thought the author overdid Reed's animosity towards Chastity leaving me thinking "Why doesn't she just go?"
I do actually like the "fake wife" genre, but I feel the author could have done much more with it here - maybe if they'd actually made it to the mission and they'd had to pretend to be a married couple the sexual tension would have esculated to more than a mere fizz.
So I guess if you're invested in the series you should read this book to see the sisters reunite (although be warned, they only catch up with one another in the last 3 pages of the book), but if you're not, skip it.

THE BEST OF THE SERIES BUT......., October 26, 2005
This review is from: Chastity (Dangerous Virtues) (Mass Market Paperback)
I THOUGHT THAT 'HONESTY' 'S STORY WAS A LITTLE ABOVE AVERAGE, SO I SKIPPED 'PURITY' AND READ 'CHASTITY'. IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE BEST OF THE SERIES. BARBIERI'S TEXAS TRIUMPH WAS EXCELLENT BUT SHE HASN'T MET THAT STANDARD IN THESE BOOKS. CHASTITY AND HER SISTERS WERE SEPARATED AS CHILDREN WHILE TRAVELING WEST WITH THEIR PARENTS. THE GOLDEN LOCKET WHICH EACH OF THEM TREASURED FROM THEIR DAD IS THE GOLDEN THREAD THROUGHOUT THE SERIES AND IS VERY MESMERIZING. EACH OF THE GIRLS SET OUT TO FIND THEIR SISTERS. CHASTITY, RAISED BY MAIDENLY 'AUNTS' IS PRIM AND PROPER. SHE TRULY EVOLVES THROUGHOUT THE BOOK. SHE MEETS THE UNFRIENDLY 'PARSON' ON THE TRAIN AND WINDS UP BEING THE ONLY ONE TO TAKE CARE OF HIM WHEN HE NEARLY DIES. HE IS RUDE AND MEAN TO HER AND OF COURSE WE FIND THAT THE PARSON IS REALLY A BOUNTY HUNTER...LYING TO EVERYONE TO COMPLETE HIS BENDETTA. CHASTITY HAS TO FACE ALL HER PAST AND REED EVOLVES INTO A SPECIAL MAN WHO HELPS HER. THERE IS A GENTLE, SENSITIVE SIDE TO REED.....WHO WOULDA THOUGHT.. AND THEY FALL IN LOVE AS THEY SAVE EACH OTHER.
BARBIERI FALLS DOWN IN 2 AREAS. THE REUNION WITH THE SISTERS IS SO FLEETING THAT YOU CAN EASILY BREEZE BY IT........SEEMS LIKE THEY DESERVE MORE AND SO DO WE AFTER 1500 PAGES OF THEM SEEKING EACH OTHER...EVEN A LITTLE EPILOGUE ON EACH OTHE SISTERS WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE. BUT THEIR SPOUSES ARE BARELY INTRODUCED AND THE GIRLS DO A GROUP HUG AND THAT IS THAT......NOTHING ABOUT THE LOCKETS, WHICH I FEEL WAS A GRAVE OVERSIGHT......THE SECOND THING THAT REALLY BOTHERED ME, WHICH EB HAS PROBABLY NO CONTROL OVER, IS THE COVER. THE BOOK IS ENTITLED 'CHASTITY' AND THE COVER SHOWS A HOMELY HALF NAKED MAN WHICH OF COURSE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BOOK. HE WAS SUCH A TURN OFF. OFTEN WONDER WHO GETS TO CHOOSE THE COVERS!!!! BARBIERI WROTE OF 3 BEAUTIFUL WOMEN...A ARTISTS DREAM..THE REDHEAD, BLONDE AND RAVEN HAIRED.WOMEN TO DIE FOR.........THE MEN ARE GORGEOUS BUT SECONARDY TO THE ENTIRE SERIES....AND THEN THERE'S THE GOLDEN LOCKET WHICH HOLDS TOG THE SERIES..AND IS NEVER NOTED........
