My sister bought this book for herself and then passed it along to me.I've read it at least fifty times! It's a classic story of a bratty princess(though she's called a 'Chataine' in the book)who eventually falls for her faithful guardian. One of the things that appealed to me was the age difference between Deirdre and Roman(the two main characters). It was encouraging to see maturity and character outweigh handsomeness and charm. The story is told from an angel's point of view(Deirdre's guardian angel)to parallel Roman's guardianship to her.Early on she is dubious of his apparant faith in 'God' but later recognizes His Hand in guarding her life. The story is running over with plot, such as assasination attempts on Deirdre(she's the king's only heir),kidnapping, romance, deception, even murder. This story is absolutely riviting and inspiring, which I believe is rare in the Christian book world.I also highly recomend the two other books in the series,'Stone of Help',in which Deirdre and her newly born baby are kidnapped, separated, and sold as slaves to a neighboring country's queen, and 'Liberation of Lystra' which is a story of combating supernatural forces.I've been searching for the next book in the series for quite some time but I've been unsucessful. If it hasn't been written yet I hope it will soon be.Recomended age of reader:12-18

Devotion. Loyalty. Love. Danger. Despair. Joy. All of these can be seen throughout Robin Hardy's, Chataine's Guardian. This story tells the tale of ten-year old heir to the throne, Deirdre, who's father appoints her a guardian. The spoiled princess despises the guard who calls himself a "Christian" and seems immune to her temper tauntrums and demands. As she matures, she realizes just how much her guardian, Roman, cares for her interests and welfare. He is the one she finds she can always count on. As danger falls upon her country of Lystra, Deirdre must make a decision to marry a ruler who can protect her province. But, she discovers that her heart is pointing her elsewhere. This story captivates the reader from the opening sentence to the last phrase. It is a compelling adventure with a touch of romance. But, it also teaches of the advantages and consequences of loyalty and love. This book should be added to everyone's library!

So many Christian fiction books are shallow, dull, boring, etc. etc. etc.--- But Chataine's Guardian definitely is NOT. There's adventure, fantasy, battles, and an overall Christian message. This is a definite book to pick up.

I have been an avid reader all my life, but very few books have captivated my imagination so much I stayed up all hours of the night to read them. The Chataine's Guardian went with me everywhere I went - I couldn't wait to find out what happened next!

All of the characters have real depth, and the storyline really keeps you guessing. I fell in love with Goldie and Roman and couldn't wait to find out how (or if!) they would get together.

After reading this book and the two sequels, I was disappointed that the world of the Chataine's Guardian had ended! So I started the first book again, this time reading it aloud to my pre-teen son. He loved it, too! He never let me miss a night of reading, and often asked for more than one chapter at a time. He even named his two goldfish Goldie and Roman!

The first time I picked up this book and read the inside flap, I put it back. Unbeknownst to me, my mother picked it up too and brought it home. She read it and then started raving about it, so I finally gave in and read it. For years, it was my favorite book, and I would pull it out once a year. The story is interesting, fast-paced, and romantic. The two sequels leave much to be desired, but this one is enough by itself.

This book certainly had an interesting plot. However, it didn't seem very organic. I thought that many times situations and characters' actions did not seem to happen naturally. I also felt that the story was very rushed. It jumped from one thing to the next without any real reasoning for why something was happening. All in all, I thought it was a great premise that fell short in the writing.

I absolutely loved this book when I was much younger, and had to get rid of it (and about 500 other books) when I moved out of state for college. Since graduating, I have searched everywhere for this book. I could not remember who wrote it, or the title of the book. I only remembered one of the main character's name was Roman. I happened upon it while searching through hundreds of books on Amazon.com, and did a happy dance in front of my computer. I read it in one day and loved it more than I had when I was younger. Excellent story with some great twists, good morals, well-written, and just a fun, imaginative story. I am so happy to have found this book!

It is the powerful inside story of being the Chataine (princess) and being the warrior who is tasked to protect her. This is my most recommended book and the one I buy as gifts to others, because it is that good! It is the book you lend with shaky reserve-because you will be reading it again and again! We are introduced to Roman, who is the childhood victim of circumstance. He arrives at the palace under the arm of the country's towering champion warrior, Galapos, Commander of the Lystran Army, who raises Roman as his own. I fostered for years and was thrilled to see Roman overcome so many things things, to keep his faith and to serve the Lord! Roman strengthens his body in part to please Galapos, and yet harbors all that happened to him. Many things combine to propel him to strive, overcome, and succeed. He eventually becomes a Captain in the Army and a terrific leader. As he continues to earn favor and advance, becoming the country's champion warrior himself, he anticipates the position of being his adoptive father's "Second" (3rd in line to assume the throne in the event there is no heir)...and he is worthy! But just as Roman is planning his career, the Chataine's life is threatened, and she must be guarded until she can be married into an alliance what will bring stability and security to her country-which will take years... In tandem, it is the story of coming to know Christ and what it means to walk in his ways-in the life and circumstances you are given. We tend to think that we know what a Christian looks like, but this author teaches us otherwise. Jeremiah records the word of God, "I am the God of all flesh, is anything too difficult for me?Read more ›

More About the Author

I've been writing Christian fiction for 30 years now, with five publishers. What I have learned, and keep learning, is that the most powerful story in the world is that of redemptive love. I post regular updates on my blog at westfordpress.com, so please stop by! And be sure to watch the Streiker Movie trailer: http://tinyurl.com/objhhn3

The new book is out! "If Only for This Life: Book 1 of the Sammy/Streiker Salmagundi" features Fletcher and Adair Streiker with Sammy Kidman and his crew. See it in the list of my titles below.
