This cold compress is one of the most durable and best I've had the ability to use. I get a lot of aches and pains because I'm a runner and an athlete. Having the cold compress helps alleviate a ton of pain and swelling from my routines. I like that it's flat and smooth. A lot of the ridged or textured ones don't seem to help as well or bulge and break. This one has kept it's shape for me and outlasted the rest.

I also use one of those pain relief roll on types. I've tried just about them all, this one by far works the best; ★ ThermaChill ★ #1 Rated Pain Relief Roll On Cold Therapy ★ Top Choice for Arthritis, Plantar Fasciitis, Tendonitis, Joint & Muscle Pain ★ Immediate Results or Your Money Back. Would recommend both for fast and effective temporary relief.

I find the Colpac Ice packs to be the best and most comfortable of medical ice packs. I was introduced to them by my physical therapist and have been using them for years. They mold to the shape of the body part that they rest on and this one in particular is easy to wrap around the knees, arms, shoulder or behind the neck. Note however that eventually all my Colpacs have failed after a year or so and the 'clay' inside will leak out.

I go to physical therapy once a week for shoulder impingement syndrome and the therapist was adamant that I should ice my shoulder twice a day. On my first visit she did some manipulation of the shoulder, taught me some exercises I do at home, and then iced my shoulder with a colpac ice pack inside a pillow case. You don't want to use one of these against bare skin - they get VERY cold.

I decided to order this brand because I knew it would be durable or the rehab place wouldn't use it. I ordered several. This one I wrap in a cloth napkin and drape it across my shoulder so when sitting reading or watching t.v. at night. I also keep one in the freezer at my office (along with a black cloth napkin to cover it).

The exterior material is very strong - and as a result it is somewhat heavy but the weight doesn't bother me. I think the heavy material makes the cold last longer and it's definitely superior to the gel packs that came with a shoulder wrap that I bought on Amazon (I'm going to replace the gel packs that came with that shoulder wrap with Colpac brand packs though I can't get the exact size I want).

In addition to this ice pack I have two others by Colpac. One is a big rectangle and one is a smaller rectangle. If I want to ice my shoulder while lying down I lie down on the big one and lay the smaller one on top of my shoulder. I'm happy with all of them.

I have an 11x21 pack used on my shoulders, neck, and upper back. After about 3 months of casual daily use it started leaking its guts out. Others have have problems with them too.

From reading other negative reviews, two suggestions from other owners stand out.

One, the Physical Therapist who introduced one owner to the product line cautioned her to put the pac in an airtight bag when in the freezer, as the dry, cold air pulls something out of the vinyl over time, making it prone to seam separation.

Two, another owner says vinyl repair patches, available at sporting goods stores, will stop the leaks. Another user tried silicone gel, duct tape, and other approaches to no avail. I tried duct tape, but the gel found its way several inches along the seam and finally appeared.

They are supposedly warrantied for a year, but after about a week nobody from the company has returned my email about returning.

My advice: avoid this product line. If you do purchase one, you might think of ways to reinforce the seams (perhaps duct tape all seams proactively to inhibit flexing (my leak occurred where the seam was folded in half for storage). And use a large freezer bag for storage.

Best of luck...

Having been an athlete through high school, college and graduate school, I sustained several injuries that continue to make me pay later in life. After several reconstructive surgeries, I have found that proper use of ice packs can be just as beneficial as most pain killers prescribed by physicians, in addition to reducing swelling and numbing the surface area. Over the years I have used the old traditional ice bags, made my own with ice cubes and plastic bags, and even used bags of frozen peas.

The most effective ice pack by far has been this Colpac. It is long enough to wrap around an ankle or neck and can be secured either by putting it inside a pillow case and tying it into a knot or by wrapping an elastic bandage around it. This ice pack freezes quickly if you lay it out flat--rather than fold it over--and it stays cold for 30-45 minutes, plenty of time for one good application. If you are recovering from an injury or surgery, buy two.

Not the same anymore. I've used this brand of cold pack for many years, but these are noticeably different. The plastic cover is much thinner and softer; hence will tear easier. The gel (when thawed) is very much oozier, making it difficult to get in the freezer in a flat position. It wants to run to one end or ends up all lumpy. AND the main issue is these do not stay cold nearly as long as my previous versions. I will probably not purchase again and will look for some other brand that is more like these used to be. One other note, why doesn't the manufacturer include a fitted, washable fabric cover for these? I'm tired of trying to wrap these in towels or something else when using. I'd gladly pay a couple of dollars more for this and it would help to protect the plastic from tearing, as well. Anyone agree?
