This is the coolest looking light on my stand even turned off. The covereage is minimal, and the scenes repeat after about 30 seconds. However, the beam effect is GREAT with fog, and friends say it alone is better than some rock concerts they have been to. I bet it would look great with two or three of these lights. Responds to sound very well, and is very light. when strategically placed, this light is brilliant.

I got a different kind of light that did not work and went to a local guitar center and bought a derby x far a party that night which was only about 40 people in a smaller hall. These lights do a great job of changing with the music, they do not weigh that much, it has good sound control, it is well constructed just in case it would happen to jump out of the truck and hit the ground and gives a good atmaspher for the party and even better with a little fog. I have not had a problem with Chauvet lights, other lights have made a lot of noise from there motors and tend to be a lot heavier. I would recomend spending a little extera to get any kind of Chauvet lighting for anyone looking to buy any kind of effect lighting. The only lighting I have that is not chauvet that I am happy with is a RYG club laser that I got cheaply on an auction site.

I'm not a DJ or anything like that. Actually, I primarily enjoy classic/arena rock and wanted a light that would look just as good for rock music at a party as it would for club/dance music. While great without fog, fog is a must for this light to really shine.
The sound sensitivity on this unit is superior to the others I have used (Vue 4.1 and LX5). The LX5 seems to want to respond to nearly every frequency, while the Vue 4.1 only responds to bass frequencies. The unique part about the Derby X is that when sensitivity is lower, it seems to only respond to bass frequencies....while when you increase sensitivity, it will respond to more midbass and midrange frequencies. Whether this is a design flaw or not, it works perfectly when you want the light to move to quicker music that doesn't necessarily have a quick bass rhythm.
While the pattern/program does repeat every 30 seconds - it moves fast/seemingly random at times that you won't easily remember what it did 30 seconds ago.. and because it responds so well to music, depending on where you're at in the song - the series of patterns may look completely different each time through any given song. Also, no matter where you start the song in the pattern - this unit seems to have a mind of it's own and will create an effect that looks like was carefully planned when in fact all you did was plug the thing in and adjust the sensitivity so it responds the way you want it to.
