3.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised though overall quality is slightly below average.
This strobe works as advertized. It is a fairly large unit and its sensitivity knob for sensing sound and beat works well. But I would say the quality is slightly below average because it is made of plastic and right out of the box one of the knobs that holds and tightens the mounting bracket was already stripped and I couldn't tighten the unit to the bracket. Chauvet ST-2000S Techno Strobe Light 2000S

I know I'm going to disappoint some Chauvet customers, but I did NOT buy this for party use!

My projects include stop motion photography along with High Speed photography. The actual physical size of the unit is much larger than I'd anticipated, The lens diameter is approximately 8" and the length approximately 10". This isn't an issue for my needs, or an indictment of the product, just information for those who might need it.

The flash is VERY bright, well into the range of my stronger (dedicated) photo flashes. Both the trigger, the auto and the music modes work quite well. In the music mode the music volume needs to be relatively loud and the strobe near the source of the sound.

This unit, like most with high output energy (and subsequent heat) has a duty cycle of 20 minutes at maximum power. This is absolutely normal for this kind of device, and it's a shame so many reviewers don't understand that concept.

All in all, a VERY impressive unit for a good price. Should we outgrow this unit (in our photo needs) we'll add more of this model for additional and extended lighting.

Five stars for this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a DJ, but this was perfect for college dorm parties., June 3, 2009

This review is from: Chauvet Techno Strobe (Electronics)
I'm a college student and I was looking for something to spice up parties in my dorm room. Imagine my delight when I found this professional strobe light and saw that it wasn't all that expensive.

The other reviews have described how this IS a professional product and therefore isn't for all situations. I would definitely agree with that, because often we had to point the light at a wall or keep it under a bed because it was so bright. However, it certainly made parties a lot more exciting.

The audio-sync mode isn't terrific. I tried it the first few times with a bunch of pop songs and it was hit or miss.
There is an input on the back of the device that would probably make the syncing a lot more accurate, but for my needs, it's not a huge deal.

PROS:
Cheap, Professional, Useable in tons of situations, Has audio-sync mode so the light blinks to the beat.

CONS:
Too powerful for most non-professional uses (so put it under furniture or under a blanket!), audio-syncing is spotty.

SUMMARY:
If you're looking for a great strobe light, get this, but keep in mind it might be too powerful for you and you'll have to figure out how to dampen it somehow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a Halloween strobe effect in your garage, February 17, 2009

Last Halloween, I purchased and mounted the Chauvet Techno Strobe above my garage door after having researched many strobe lights on the market.

I wanted one that was bright, relatively inexpensive and had a built-in mic with adjustable speed. This model certainly fit the bill. With the built-in mic, I got what I wanted, which was a random flash, and not a steady tempo flash. This gave more of a lightning effect which is what I wanted to go along with the haunted "slaughter room" we had constructed in the garage.

Being a former mobile DJ, I have send and worked with my share of strobe lights. This strobe is a keeper. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great item for this price!, November 30, 2009

I searched all over for a 70+ watt strobe, even craigslist, couldn't find anything decent for under $70. This thing works great, very bright, easy controls, well packaged. My only gripes are the unit size (freakin huge) and the sound activation is very impact/bass sensitive. My scream track blasting from a speaker very close couldn't consistently trigger it, so i bought a $10 remote control outlet, which worked fine. Nothing else has sound activation for under $100 , so at this price, I really can't complain too much. Also, I ordered two of these, and one came with a broken bulb. But amazon's return process was easy, and I had a refund within 4 days of mailing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Light for a Dance Party, February 11, 2011
This review is from: Chauvet Techno Strobe (Electronics)
To the people that say the sound active feautre is not very good are not using the light properly. First off its a TECHNO Strobe which means it reacts best to bass drops/beats, roll-ins etc. This light is very light and the strobe looks great. If you need a low-cost high quality strobe to hang on your trusses I recomend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really sweet strobe light, July 10, 2009

This strobe light is the real deal. I don't know if you could really get any more strobey than this bad boy. Its super bright, so bright that I shine it against the wall to get the effect. The sync with the sound is pretty nice, but I like the manual tuning better, its easier to make the strobe go at the frequency that creates the robot-motion effect or the other effects that occur at specific frequencies. Its pretty big, and pretty sweet. I don't know what else to say, I give this one 5 stars its very cool to have at a party.

2.0 out of 5 stars Marginally functional at Best, June 19, 2010

This review is from: Chauvet Techno Strobe (Electronics)
I ordered it for my daughter's 12th birthday party, because she really wanted dancing. It was a last minute order, because I had been planning to rent one until I saw what the rental rates were.
It worked out of the box perfectly, once. A little weaker than I had hoped, but that was not wholly unexpected, since the script suggested multiple lights.
I did, however, expect it to work more than 5 minutes. That's how long we had it going on the test run the day before the party. The next day at the party, the steady strobe failed completely. We could only get it to work with the sound activated function, and that only worked with the speakers literally pressed against the sides of the light. That meant that it couldn't be suspended, we had to sit it on the table, so it was in everybody's eyes.
I'm pretty disappointed.

I don't recommend this product for professional or heavy use. Another Chauvet product I own (colored light ball) is made of metal and has lasted through several years of use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Strobe, April 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chauvet Techno Strobe (Electronics)
The strobe is more powerful then I expected. It easily fills the dance floor in my fraternity basement (20' x 30'). The strobe is sound activated but I highly recommend buying a strobe controller as well. I bought this one and am very happy with it (Chauvet Basic Strobe Controller - Sound Activated with Cable). The sound activation control on the strobe itself is accurate but is often a bit slow. I also like being able to mount the strobe on the ceiling and have a switch to control it readily accessible.
