5.0 out of 5 stars great for retirees
Although we love to travel, being on a fixed income has dampened our plans. What a surprise to be able to visit the City on the Bay and not go over budget! We saw plenty of city sights, ate at great restaurants and didn't go broke on accommodations. Wish we had this book years ago.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped it would be.
This book is probably better for a resident of the San Francisco area than for a tourist. I'd hoped to find tips for restaurants and touring that would be places that locals would patronize, enjoy and not spend a lot of money. There was not enough of that for my purposes. I consulted it several times the first two days of my visit, but decided I hadn't gotten enough out...

Ms. Solomon has found all the activities that are the reasons we love to live in a culturally rich city like San Francisco. She writes about some of my favorite spots, but also so many things I never found on my own. I wish I had read this years ago. Buy this book and plan to fill your calendar!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Weekend EVER!! LOL!, July 1, 2008

I travel to San Francisco once or twice a year to get away from LA. Saw the book on Amazon and figured it would probably be a humorous read but didn't really expect any practical advice. To my surprise it was actually both. It's a smart funny read but it also REALLY DOES have the low down on free food, fun, and frolicking. My boyfriend and I went up a few weeks ago and planned the whole weekend using the book. Found plenty of art, parks, and music to keep us busy and hit some cheap and/or free happy hours and food joints. Probably the most fun I've had in the City and definitely the least expensive weekend ever! Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful tips and a good laugh, June 10, 2008
This review is from: The Cheap Bastard's Guide to San Francisco: Secrets of Living the Good Life--for Free! (Paperback)
Being the gourmand that I am, I especially liked the section on eating for cheap, and sometimes for free. Good cheap tips and witty banter make for an amusing read.

Now I need to find a book like this for London.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Great Advice, May 23, 2008
This review is from: The Cheap Bastard's Guide to San Francisco: Secrets of Living the Good Life--for Free! (Paperback)
I've lived in San Francisco for over a decade and was surprised how much stuff there was in here that I didn't know about. Tourists would like it too, as it has a lot of stuff you won't find in a normal guidebook.

I liked this as it was written in a very practical way with plenty of good suggestions. We were only in SF for a few days so it was not as used as I'd have liked. I'd recommend it more for travellers staying for a longer period of time.

I consulted it several times the first two days of my visit, but decided I hadn't gotten enough out of it to warrant carrying it around with me. It was a disappointment. And maybe I'm not that cheap after all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Staying in SF for a few days or a few decades?, June 18, 2008
This review is from: The Cheap Bastard's Guide to San Francisco: Secrets of Living the Good Life--for Free! (Paperback)
This book is packed with great facts and activity suggestions for both locals and tourists, and for those, like me, who go to SF often as a day trip.

It covers pretty much every interest a visitor might have. Plus it's a slim volume, reasonable to stick in your backpack.

An essential read for cheapskates and big spenders alike. Written with a knowledgeable and detail oriented style. Even if you have never set foot in SF, it is an entertaining study of the city's culture.
