London is among the most popular and expensive foreign cities Americans visit. Gustafson, author of Cheap Eats in Paris and Cheap Sleeps in Paris (both Chronicle, 1990), offers similar advice for budget-conscious travelers headed to London. Cheap Eats describes over 100 reasonably priced restaurants, pubs, tearooms, and wine bars where top value in terms of service, cleanliness, food, quality, and atmosphere can be found. Listings include subway locations, hours, holidays open, type of menu and food, tipping, reservations, and price range. Also included are useful tips on London dining etiquette and customs. Cheap Sleeps describes 135 reasonably priced hotels, bed and breakfasts, full-service apartments, and rooms in private homes. Selections were based upon comfort, quality, cleanliness, and overall value. Good advice on what to look for in a room, confirming reservations, currency, clothing, senior discounts, telephones, transportation, etc., will aid unsuspecting tourists. Bathroom and elevator availability is included along with the usual price, size, and location information in each listing. Both titles are essential for budget travelers. Highly recommended for all travel collections.
