OK, maybe I'm being too critical, but I thought the picture quality was not quite as good as I expected. That being said, this DVD is still a "must buy" for any music lover. The song Mandocello was worth the price of the DVD alone, not to mention such rare songs as Hot Love and How Are You? Particularly good is the commentary by the band in the extras section. Most...

2.0 out of 5 stars This DVD just does not do the band justice...
Let me begin by saying I am a HUGE fan of Cheap Trick, and I bought this DVD with the highest of hopes.

Yes, the band and the songs are both GREAT.

But the audio is terrible and the video is worse. Bad camera work, muddy sound. Not the reasons one purchases the DVD format.

On the plus side, the commentary track is GREAT!

But, the show is the reason I bought it,...

4.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch, July 14, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Cheap Trick - Music for Hangovers (DVD)
"Music for Hangovers" is definitely the best of the DVD's that Cheap trick has to offer. The actual video quality is not that great, but the music is what matters. This DVD will impress all the hardcore Cheap Trick fans, with the selection of songs you never have heard performed. The selections stand the test of time; the songs still sound fresh today, as they did when they first where pressed on vinyl. Man, did we come a long way! "Silver" is an alright DVD, but for the person who really loves their music, "Hangovers" is the choice to make!

The song Mandocello was worth the price of the DVD alone, not to mention such rare songs as Hot Love and How Are You? Particularly good is the commentary by the band in the extras section. Most commentaries are boring, but Rick, Tom, Robin, and Bun E. do a great job! Did you know that one of the guitars Rick uses was a gift from George Harrison? I hope there is a follow up box set that covers all four nights. That would be Heaven Tonight!

This DVD makes me really bummed that it's been years since the band was last here in Australia!!
It's really awesome, and the commentary track is worth the price alone!
They just get better and better - Robin's voice is beyond compare, Rick is a total legend, Tom is just too cool for school and Bun E. rocks!
Buy this, you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Like Being There! It Rocks!, April 1, 2002

This review is from: Cheap Trick - Music for Hangovers (DVD)
Well this has to be one of the most anticipated DVD's for me in the past 3 years. And let me tell you, it does not disappoint in the least! Cheap Trick is represented here with what they do best.....LIVE MUSIC that will rock you and roll you all over your living room!

I was lucky enough to be at all four of the Chicago Metro shows back in 1998. This DVD is a great keep-sake from those 4 nights of incredible music and vibes. The sound quality on this DVD is just spectacular! I recommend the 5.1 selection, you feel like you are standing in the middle of the main floor at the Metro!

The video is pretty good quality too, although some camera shots are not quite as crisp as others, but it will not take anything away from this experience. The fish-eye camera lens is pretty cool too, but I must admit it took me off guard the first time I viewed this DVD.

There are a few extras on this DVD, but the one that you must go to after your view the concert is the "commentary track". Oh, man-I feel off the couch laughing hysterically! All four members of Cheap Trick are in one this one and let me tell you, it's a great time! You feel like you are in the room watching it with them. They should start their own comedy group.

The poke fun at themselves, give you cool and interesting facts on certain facets of their equipment, choice of clothes, favorite songs, moments, etc. It's truly a privilege to be in on their conversation.

All-in-all this DVD, "Music For Hangovers" was well worth the wait! If you were not able to be there, you will be able to get an idea of what that night was all about. For those of you that were there, it's a great ride back to those four nights in which Cheap Trick proves again that they are one of, if not, the best, live bands in rock history! Thank you Cheap Trick!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap Trick at their finest, March 29, 2002
By

This review is from: Cheap Trick - Music for Hangovers (DVD)
I'll spare the historical dissertation and just stick to a review of this DVD. Cheap Trick is widely regarded as one of the world's best rock bands, and they definitely prove it here. Music For Hangovers was filmed over four nights in early May of 1998 at Chicago's Metro Cabaret. Each night, the band performed tunes from their first four albums, "Cheap Trick", "In Color", "Heaven Tonight", and "At Budokan". Many of these early songs were rarely played before, or never at all in some cases. The collection here are some of the best songs that were featured. Personally, I think the first album's material really stood above everything else. "Hot Love" is a up tempo burner, "Taxman, Mr. Thief" with its infectiously catchy chorus, and "Mandocello", the haunting ballad. "Mandocello" also features a guest appearance by Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins. Cheap Trick has always been able to balance sheer power and aggressiveness with real beauty in their performances and this is no exception. Rick Nielsen runs around the stage like a mad man tossing picks every note he plays and Robin Zander's voice is one of the best in rock. Tom Petersson and Bun E Carlos lay down a solid rhythm. I was surprised to see how non affected most of the audience seemed for two reasons. One, the band is just smoking, and two, these very special performances were played in Chicago, not far from Cheap Trick's home town of Rockford. It just didn't seemed like the audience realized how special this was. It's a good thing the DVD is here so the rest of us can appreciate it.

Also, the bands commentary on the performance is just hilarious. Great camera work and sound overall. Enough said. Buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheap Trick 5 Stars DVD 3 1/2 stars, March 27, 2002

This review is from: Cheap Trick - Music for Hangovers (DVD)
If anyone has read my glowing review of the CD version of this, you know that I absolutely love the performance on it. Recorded over 4 nights at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago (about 40 miles from Cheap Trick's hometown of Rockford) these shows have become legendary among Trickheads. The DVD features a nice 5.1 mix, amusing audio commentary from the boys a-la MST3K style with sillouhettes of the band's heads at the bottom of the screen, camera work is only ok. (the guys in the band do like the fish-eye effect one of the cameras use for some reason). I really wish the DVD would have had more songs from the shows on it though. Of course, what I really wanted was a box set of all 4 shows in their entirety. 1 hour is simply not enough for this fan. GUYS- BOX SET PLEASE! CD or DVD, I'll plunk down for it. Just ask The Who-I bought all those reissues of "Live At Leeds"!
All in all, it is a real bargain for 14.99. Heck, the ferocious performance of "Gonna Raise Hell" is worth that alone. (Did I see the whole room moving?)

5.0 out of 5 stars So fun to Watch, July 26, 2006
This review is from: Cheap Trick - Music for Hangovers (DVD)
Not only do I have this audio CD of this four night concert, but I also have the DVD.

I have to say, this band is JUST GREAT FUN to watch. I am a Cheap Trick fan of late, but I know good music and a great performance, which this is both. I find myself rocking and bopping to the movements of Petersson and getting into the what I think is the emotion of the groups mix, they do an awesome show. The DVD, I have loaned out to some friends, who were not into Cheap Trick, but after seeing them, they are their fans now. Get the CD, get the DVD

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw and Intense, June 3, 2002
By
This review is from: Cheap Trick - Music for Hangovers (DVD)
This DVD concert is the result of four intense concert appearences by Cheap Trick at the Metro in Chicago. Each night Cheap Trick would play a complete version of one of their first four albums so with this DVD, and the CD released a while back, you get the best performances played by the band during those sets.

As the CD, this DVD is "straight in your face" 70's hard rock without any special effects or sound mix to cover for any mistakes or sound problem. But, fear not as there are no mistakes made by the band and the sound, although this is for sure not the best sounding DVD in the market, is true to concert atmosphere.

The band just burns through each track with great playmanship and intensity. The best thing about this concert footage is that you feel how exited the band members are of playing these songs.

My only complaint is that perhaps the video quality is not the most "professional" one I have seen. I know that the show was filmed with video camaras in order to have that bootleg or home made feel but some of the shots really loose resolution compared with others in the video that were shot with high resolution cameras.

Anyhow is a great chance to experience Cheap Trick's music at its best and therefore a good buy for any fan of hard 70's rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now I know why I'm a Cheap Trick Fan!!, June 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Cheap Trick - Music for Hangovers (DVD)
Well folks after viewing "Live in Austrailia", then "Silver" (in that order-oh, and don't forget "Every Trick in the Book") Music for Hangovers typifies the true energy of Cheap Trick in a smaller venue. I like the stripped down versions of the songs (sans keyboard), because it didn't abide by the rules of a studio album. Bun E. is one of the most dexterous drummer I have ever seen, almost watching a whole marching band in one person...Robin singing was excellent, Rick's guitar playing was awesome and Tom's bass playing stunned me..he was so note perfect, everything thing he did shaped the song. This reminds me for some reason of a Hard Rock performance I had seen in Miami a few years ago. More intimate, music cutting right through you like a knife, and that connection between audience and band. To be quite honest I could have done without Billy and D'Arcy but I would tell anyone to buy this first before buying Silver. Peace

5.0 out of 5 stars CHEAP TRICK CONTINUES TO DOMINATE, May 18, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Cheap Trick - Music for Hangovers (DVD)
This band continues to hone their craft, and they simply get better and better as time goes on. Whether you are a casual fan, or a die-hard, this latest DVD captures Cheap Trick in their live element, performing a mixture of hits and album tracks. The 5.1 surround sound is thunderous, capturing all the nuances of Bun's drum work, rick's crunch, robins screams and tom's 12 sting bass. It's like being there. Picture quality ranges from great to not so great depending on the camera angle, but this is a live show with the varied lighting you'd get being there, so just like being there, the clarity varies with the lighting. It's a great DVD, from one of the best American bands ever. These guys still play with conviction, and are a true four piece band. Show me another 25 year old band that can do this. No sampling, no offstage backup vocals, no horn section, no pyrotechnics. Just Pure, straight-up, rock n roll. Young, up and coming bands lack this kind of energy. CHEAP TRICK!!
