Greater than the sum of its parts.,
By
This review is from: Cheap Trick - Silver (DVD)
I'm giving this 5 stars not because it's perfect, which it's not, but because the experience as a whole is far greater than the sum of its individual parts. I don't think it's fair to score this DVD by separating each part and grading individually by sound, picture, etc. I will do so, but I want to make it clear first that this concert DVD experience taken as a whole is just awesome. If you grew up listening to this group on the radio, you owe it to yourself to see them live. As a former non-fan of Cheap Trick, I had never seen them live before, or owned any of their albums. Seeing this DVD however, I realize that I missed out on one of the world's best live acts. They are tight, energetic, and fun to watch, even after all these years. They are in fine form here.

Cheap Trick is probably my second favorite band of all time & I've seen them live about nine times through the years so I'm a little biased from the start. I bought this from their website after seeing the DirectTV free version of this show. That version has nine extra songs on it plus the other version as well (two dvds) & I couldn't be more thrilled with this. They are still as great as they were when they started & to have the original lineup after all these years says something as well. Absolutely untouchable set which would've been even better without that jerk from Everclear ruining "Daytripper". But it's nice to see other musicians paying their respects to these guys. It's nice to see them get recognition from their peers that unfortunately continues to go unobtained from the public. This band has always been innovative and imaginative in its approach. Most of their records are quite different taken one by one and I just hope they have a new one out soon as promised. It's been five years now & the last one was just excellent!! This would be an excellent place to start if you've never experienced the magic that is Cheap Trick!! The Wolf

It's Real,
This review is from: Cheap Trick - Silver (DVD)
It's interesting that some of the reviews state the audio is poor quality and cameras are overexposed and that it seems a little home-made. That's exactly why I like this DVD. It's an actual concert and for whatever reason, I feel I am there, in the streets of Rockford, and a part of the audience. The audio is actually quite decent, however, the microphones do pick up a lot of the ambient crowd noise. But in no way does it detract from the music. In fact, that's part of what I like about it. It is, after all, a street concert (actually a park concert, but you get the idea). No big screen TV's, fireworks, lasers, stealth bombers flying overhead, etc. Who needs that when you have the energy of Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson, Bun E Carlos, Jon Brant, and special guests that make this cocnert rock! These awesome band members are doing what they do best, and it's very clear they are enjoying every minute of it!

This DVD was worth the money!!!,

I now own two of Cheap Trick concert dvd's. One is live from Australia and now Silver. I loved Silver much better because the music was so much tighter than the Austrialian one. I honestly dont know what was dubbed in and im sure there were mistakes, but from what I could tell musically they were right on the money for a live performance. Take it from me-I'm a musician that has played live and sometimes perfection isnt important; its the vibe conveyed by the band. I didn't like the video either but i would say its more the lighting that really bothered me than anything else. Some songs it seemed Tom was really playing too loud and couldnt hear rick or robin's singing. On the commentary it was nice to see Bun E. Joke around and explain the background of the songs...especially that thing about John Lennon commenting that this was the guitar played on Day Tripper, but Cheap Tricks version was on the charts at that very time. All in all well worth the money and I have seen CT 10 times up close and far away. Good flow and vibe.

cheap trick OVER exposed,

I will probably take a LOT of heat for this 3 star rating but read first and scream later. The group itself rates a 5 star review but the production is ZERO. I have been looking forward to this release and what a let down...in the age of DVD we are used to professionally filmed and edited footage and this DVD is a waste of the format...heck BETA is too good for this slop. The group plays and sings great...but the camera work is amateurish at best and the exposures are all over the map. What that means to non photographers out there is that during the course of a song the group is shot at one angle from a camera that is properly exposed with colors that are vivid..then shifts to another shot where the artists are nothing but WHITE BLURS due to incorrect exposure of the film/video. The other DVD on the market from a club in Australia YEARS ago..looks soo much better.Anyway...I love cheap trick and am glad to own this but it rates only a notch better than the audio CDs already available due to the ... production values. I guess what I am saying is ..go ahead and buy , but lower your expectations if you have seen any decent video in the last 30 years.

Poor quality? WHERE?,
This review is from: Cheap Trick - Silver (DVD)
I've been a Cheap Trick since album number one. When I saw that they were coming out with this 25th anniversary concert on CD and DVD as well, I opted for the DVD (I have just recently purchased the double CD). I fail to see where the audio is of poor quality. The acoustic performances in the middle of the set sound just this side of perfect, and the electric stuff sounded, to these ears, clearer than I have ever heard. The video quality didn't bother me in the least, in fact, I thought the whole thing was well produced in general. It's to the band's credit that they offered and delivered a song from every album over the years, and they still sound as good as they ever have. Their musicianship is hands down some of the finest out there; you just don't do what Rick Neilsen and Tom Petersson manage to do night after night without possessing some amazing musical ability, and Robin Zander has one of the most powerful voices to come down the pike in years (and comes eerily close to John Lennon territory on some of the material), and Bun E. Carlos packs an amazing punch on the drums (kudos to the drum choir at the end for its sheer craziness). The commentary gives some very cool insight (I noticed nothing was said about "The Flame", widely known as not one of Rick's favorite songs but a huge hit nonetheless) and the behind-the-scenes stuff is just off the wall! I didn't find anything poor about the quality of this show at all...if someone is expecting "The Wall", they're looking in the wrng place. This collection brings across the true spirit of a band rock and roll is a lot better off for having experienced, and they're still at it. The preview tracks from their June 2006 release "Rockford" on their website are nothing less than I expected from one of the best bands, then and now.

Sound is great, Video is poor,

I was highly disappointed in the lack of quality in the video production. It seemed like they were using production equipment from the early 80's. The Band's performance was excellent ! !

Why are they not in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame? Cheap Trick Rules!,
By Mark Da Shark (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cheap Trick - Silver (DVD)
Rock n Roll Hall of Fame will not be legitimate until Cheap Trick is elected. This DVD is proof they are America's greatest living Rock n Roll Band.
Robin Zander is america's premiere Rock N Roll singer, second to none. Rick Nielsen is an awesome songwriter who has penned dozens of hits that are highlighted here. Plus Nielsen's guitar chops and axewielding are still going strong. Tom Peterson the inventor of the 12-string Bass keeps the hooks coming like a second lead guitar player and maintains the backbeat with Bun E. Carlos. These guys are putting on a Rock N Roll clinic for the ages here and it is a shame they are not more truly appreciated. My only gripe with the DVD is that one of the main cameras is overexposed and the camera work is really that of a B-Crew. That is the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 ... as Cheap Tricks performance is fantastic!

Whats not to like about CT? I own this DVD and the audio double cd. Thats it-believe me, thats all you'll need. What really makes it worth it is the "commentary". A fabulous and totally hillarious walk thru of all the songs on the DVD. I can think of no other band that has the ability to laugh at themselves like these guys do. That humor along with superior musicianship makes them as well as this DVD a must have!

The boys take the stage on their hometown for a "silver" anniversary concert and pull out all the stops. Guest stars abound along with a host of other musicians add to the celebration and the crowd was indeed rabid. All the songs are represented here that CT fans expect and are delivered with verve. All band members are represented here, and even former bassist Jon Brandt joins in for his album cuts. The DVD offers up a nice selection of extras including Rick Nielson hamming it up for the camera off stage (and on stage of course). Cheap Trick wails and all is right in the world. Now for the negatives from this release. Sound is just okay, after some heavy EQ work I was able to get a very good sound from my Sony 5.1 system, but camera work is indeed lacking. Cameras used for long shots had badly overexposed pictures much of the time and many of the handheld shots were in wrong position, but that may have been an editing problem. All in all I give the performance 5-stars and production 3 stars (a very generous 3-stars).
