Book Description

Cheap and easy! January 1993
IS YOUR WASHER:

Leaking water?

Leaking oil?

Overflowing?

Not filling, or filling too slowly?

Not agitating, or agitating weakly?

Not spinning?

Not draining?

Not doing anything?

Leaving your clothes too wet at the end of the cycle?

Vibrating uncontrollably?

Spinning and agitating at the same time?

Screeching, squeaking, clattering, knocking, buzzing, or making grinding or other strange noises?

Do you smell smoke?

Our washer repair manual can help!

Your Maytag washer is leaking; what things do you check first? How about if it was a Whirlpool or GE washer? It's a different set of likely problems. The same things tend to fail in the same designs. Why not save yourself some time, hassle and money, and just go there first? Diagnosis and repair procedures are included for the most common symptoms, such as leaks, no fill or slow fill, clothes too wet after cycle ends, no agitate, no spin, no drain, timer, drive motor and other electrical troubles. Covers all major appliance brands commonly available in the US, including Whirlpool / Kenmore, GE, Maytag, Hotpoint, JC Penney, Amana, Norge, Speed Queen, Westinghouse, Kelvinator, Frigidaire, Gibson, Montgomery Ward, Signature and many others.

Note: This manual does not cover front-loading washers; only top-loaders.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I wrote the Cheap and Easy! appliance repair series for people who are fairly mechanically-minded, but just need a little coaching when it comes to appliances. Can you change the oil or spark plugs in your car? Most appliance repairs are no more difficult than that; diagnose the problem, change the part. A few tips and tricks, when necessary. In the manuals, I *do* inform you of how to diagnose more difficult problems (such as sealed system problems in refrigerators.) In these cases, depending on the diagnosis, I will advise you to call a professional service technician or scrap the machine; at least you will be able to make an informed decision. To my experience, these represent less than five percent of all appliance repairs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent diagrams and directions for the do-it-your-selfer, August 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cheap and Easy! Washing Machine Repair (Cheap and Easy! Appliance Repair Series) (Paperback)
My GE Washer had leaked most of its oil from its transmission out onto the floor. The washer was still working and washing clothes, albiet the transmission was starting to sound a little worn out. Given the cost to have it repaired (by a repairman) was greater than the cost of a new machine. I decided I'd have to fix it myself or buy a new washer.

So I flipped the washer on its side and started to work on it. 20 minutes later I had oil up to my elbows and had come to the realization that there was no way I was going to get the transmission out of this thing and get it back together. Since my goal was to fix it, not disassemble it into an unusable piece of junk, I put the motor back on and put the washer back into service.

Now I don't like being beat by a dumb piece of machinery. I searched the web for some more info and eventually ran across this book on Amazon.

Well the book came in. I skimmed the section on GE Washers and went to work. 15 minutes and one stubborn torx screw later I had the transmission out. Exchanged it for a rebuilt tranmission the next day. Got home that evening and 20 minutes later I had the new transmission in and the machine up and running.

Bottom line - knowledge is power! This book has excellent diagrams and clear instructions. Knowing how to do the repair is 90% of the job. I certainly had no idea how to do it. You do need some mechanical ability and a good toolset (sockets, WD-40, torx driver, etc), knowledge how to use the tools and some common sense. But, you don't need to be a Nascar motor tech to get the job done.

Bottom line - if you can change the oil in your car - you can certainly do this repair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money Saver, June 19, 1999

This book is great for anyone taken once too many times to the cleaners by appliance repairmen. It's written in easy to understand language that any novice do-it-yourselfer can follow. In just the few times I have used this book it's saved me more money than buying 10 copies. Excellent.
