Book Description

This is the first in a series of inspirational/motivational gift books that use inanimate objects as metaphors for enhancing the way we live. In this lighthearted look at personal problem solving patterns, "Cheaper Than Therapy: How to Keep Life's Small Problems from Becoming Big Ones" illustrates "The Lesson of the Paper Clips." Gina Greenlee uses playful images of pliant paper clips to show how choosing what seems to be the easy way out of life's small problems often results in bigger, more overwhelming ones. When paper clips hook onto each other and wind up tangled on our desks, Gina invites us to examine our interaction with these modest fragments of wire to uncover the metaphor for transforming how we live. "Cheaper Than Therapy: How to Keep Life's Small Problems from Becoming Big Ones" is a whimsical yet thought provoking handbook for everyone who wants to become more skilled at handling whatever life brings their way.

More About the Author

Native New Yorker. Traveled around the world solo. Have lived in seven states, two countries and on two continents. Wrote three books. Sang back up on one Tiny Tim Christmas album. Don't own a television. Introverted but nobody believes it. Failed 10th grade geometry; aced graduate school statistics. Was a vegetarian for 18 years until I woke up one morning screaming, "Tuna!" Wrote a newspaper magazine column called "Dating Gina" in which there was very little dating. Ran three marathons and at the end of each always wondered, "Why?" Latest heroes are writing teacher William Zinsser and self-taught topiary artist Pearl Fryar. Would eat an avocado a day if I could find truly ripe ones with no bruises or strings...and someone to slice them for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars message and idea are good, price high for what you get, June 15, 2008
This review is from: Cheaper Than Therapy: How to Keep Life's Small Problems from Becoming Big Ones (Hardcover)
The idea of the book is good, if you don't take care of the little things when they first appear, they end up snowballing and becoming big things. However, I thought the book would include more to read and digest rather than just drawings of paperclips. OK I get the message now offer some insight on motivation. The message didn't need 109 pages of paperclips to get the message across. One cartoon would have done. It took me all of 5 minutes to "read". Sorry, wanted more for the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheaper Than Therapy, September 15, 2006

Who wants to be uncomfortable? No one. Well, "Cheaper Than Therapy" uses the coolest paperclips to remind us that consistent comfort comes at a heavy pile up or at a high price. The truth isn't easy to hear but it's indeed simple. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to function better in life. I'd also recommend this book to anyone who wants to say, " I actually read an entire book today!" I'm a busy one and for me that in it self was theraputic. Thanks Gina! :)

This review is from: Cheaper Than Therapy: How to Keep Life's Small Problems from Becoming Big Ones (Hardcover)
Cheaper Than Therapy is a delightful lesson in becoming more self-aware and in learning to keep little worries from growing out of proportion. When I finished this easy read, it occurred to me that I could have used this advice twenty years ago. I immediately ordered two more copies of the book to give as gifts to two young friends whom I felt could benefit from the wisdom found between its covers. I would recommend it to anyone who is ready to take a small step toward a better way of thinking about life.
