Book Description

August 1, 1998 Cat Austen Mysteries
Fully recovered from the gunshot wound that landed Cat Austen in the hospital in Death of a DJ, and over the shock of stumbling upon the corpse of Santa Claus in Fruitcake, Cat has reluctantly agreed to take off with Victor Cardenas (Lieutenant, ACPD) for a four-day weekend in San Juan -- but fate steps in to save her from having to back out at the last minute when Victor is called to the murder scene in what looks to be number three in a serial-killer case.

Cat just has time to heave a guilty sigh of relief when she realizes that the murdered woman was involved with her brother Dominic's Church of St. Agnes--and so were the others. Within a matter of days, three more women are murdered; again, all have some involvement with St. Agnes. Could it be, was it even conceivable, that Cat's beloved priest/brother could be a murderer?

Back again to enliven the pages are Cat's six brothers, her mother; Ellice; and Cat's two children, Mats and Jane. The crew from Cop Watch is in town, too, to shoot the Death of a DJ episode; and of course Ritchie Landis wants Cat to get him the goods on The Slasher for the Chronicle....

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Sympathetic and convincing characters are stronger than the puzzle in this third mystery in the Cat Austen series (after Fruitcake, 1997). Cat, a freelance writer and young widowed mother from a large Italian family in southern New Jersey, is dreading a vacation she has agreed to take with her Shakespeare-quoting suitor, Police Lt. Victor Cardenas, when a murder materializes to prevent it. It is the fourth in a series of murders in which the victims?all women?share a link to St. Agnes Church, where Cat's brother Dom is a priest. A subplot involves a television program called CopWatch, which is in town to film a re-creation of one of Cat's earlier stories. The academic adviser is Ted Cusack, who had tried to rape Cat when she was in college and, without recognizing her, puts the make on her again. Cat's ambivalence toward Victor is further complicated when he decides that Father Dom is the killer. Three more deaths occur before Cat and the police, five of whom are also her brothers, identify who murdered whom. While the close small-town and family relationships are a challenge to keep straight, Rubino's vigorous prose and engaging cast offer ample rewards to persistent readers.

From Library Journal

Freelance writer Cat Austen lives in a climate conducive to investigation: her lover, Victor, and five of her brothers are cops. She and Victor work separately on a recent case of murder in Atlantic City that apparently ties in with three earlier killings. The first clue leads directly to the neighborhood church where Cat's sixth brother is a priest. Thick with procedure, family interconnections, possible prostitution overtones, and observations on the changing cityscape, this mystery by the author of Fruitcake (Write Way, 1997) is strongly recommended for most collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Small Press Mystery is a Hidden Gem !, August 5, 1999

This review is from: Cheat the Devil (Cat Austen Mysteries) (Hardcover)
Cat Fortunati Austen is tracking the beginnings of a TV episode based on her "Death of a DJ" adventure while a serial killer is tracking women from her brother Dominic's blue-collar Atlantic City Parish. It is a real treat to watch author Rubino spin out this suspenseful tale as she weaves these plots together in this intriguing, off-beat, and ultimately heart-rending tale. Rubino has a knack for satire and for wringing out both tears of laughter and sadness, a real feel for characters and a writer of some very, very funny dialogue. There are a lot of books by bigger houses that don't have a fraction of this book's suspense or storytelling skill. I hope the fourth book is in the works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taut, suspenseful, romantic and hilarious- all in one book!, July 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Cheat the Devil (Cat Austen Mysteries) (Hardcover)
With this third Cat Austen mystery, Jane Rubino delivers a tautly paced drama balanced with a comic and suspenseful subplot. With their romantic getaway derailed, Cat Austen is left to deal with the pre-production chaos surrounding the CopWatch television show's episode based on Cat's "Death of a DJ" adventure, and Victor must deal with the latest in a series of murders that have an uncomfortably close link to the parish church of Cat's brother, Father Dominic Fortunati. As suspicion threatens to cause a rift in the relationship between Cat and Victor, a man from Cat's past threatens her peace of mind, as her compulsion to live up to the bravado of "Kate Auletta", the TV version of Cat, nudges her toward a heartstopping climax. This is the third Cat Austen mystery, and as with Death of a DJ and Fruitcake, the author supplies thrills, a host of true-to-life characters and the most side-splitting dialogue of any writer in the field. Highly recommende! d.

5.0 out of 5 stars We Need More Cat and Victor, April 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Cheat the Devil (Cat Austen Mysteries) (Hardcover)
I just finished Cheat the Devil and have started Plot Twist, which I plan to read much slower as it is, so far, the last in the series. I rate Jane Rubino right up there with Jan Burke, Earlene Fowler, Carolyn Haines and Marcia Muller. Although the romance between Cat and Victor exists, the stories don't need to revolve around it as you become so caught up in all the characters (I want Cat's family) and the solid story lines. One of the many things I loved about Cheat the Devil is that you are coming upon the end of the book and you THINK the murders are solved and it's a wrap, but then . . . surprise! Death of a DJ and Fruitcake are also highly recommended.
