Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-Everything seemed to be turning out right for Lucy Lovello at the start of 7th grade-until she cheats at a friend's birthday bowling party. One boy sees her and tells the others, and Lucy has a new nickname-CHEATER! She is distraught by what she has done and fears it will label her for life. Levy deals with some of the realities of middle school life: peer pressure, boy-girl relationships, and learning how to overcome obstacles. All of her characters show realistic idiosyncrasies associated with young teens. Incidents are well paced, building on each event as well as incorporating into the narrative contemporary topics, such as the scientific theory of chaos. The author keeps the tone and tenor equally matched to Lucy's mood, ranging from lighthearted conversations to deep-seated dread of rejection and ridicule. A well-tempered portrayal of young adolescent life.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. When 13-year-old Lucy Lovello lies about her bowling score so that she and Joey Rich will win first prize, she makes two mistakes: She assumes that Joey wants to win very badly, and she thinks she needs to impress him so that he'll like her. When Albert tells everyone she cheated, Lucy feels she'll never live the label down. Her problem is compounded when her demanding science teacher and basketball coach believes she may have cheated on a test (she actually studied hard to bring up two failing grades) and asks her, along with Joey and Albert, whose grades also have dramatically improved, to retake the exam. Lucy's discovery that her best friend, Melanie, has supplied the boys with the answers seriously threatens the girls' friendship. Levy neatly and believably ties up all the issues and misunderstandings, and her provocative subject could be used to generate class discussion about cheating, grading, testing, and even popularity. Chris Sherman

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, made me quess every page!, March 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Cheater, Cheater (Library Binding)
This book takes place at School, bowling alley, and at Lucy's house. It's about a girl who cheats at bowling to impress a guy she likes. When someone catches her, the guy she likes gets mad at her. After she cheated, she couldn't stop. Then when she doesn't cheat, the teacher thinks she did. So . . .

I liked this book because of the way Lucy handled her problem. She knew it was wrong to cheat, so she tried not to do it, and she stopped cheating. Lucy was also my favorite character for just being caring and a good friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheater Cheater, December 10, 1999
This review is from: Cheater, Cheater (Paperback)
The best age group for reading Cheater Cheater is middle school students and people who like to read short stories. I think this is a really good book because I like the fact that it had something to do with everyday life for children my age. Well, my favorite part of the book was when Lucy went to her best friend's birthday party. Her friend's name is Melanie; Lucy was nervous because it was a couples only party. So Lucy asked this new boy Joey. His father owned a basketball team. Joey said "Yes."I was really dispionted in Lucy when she lied about her bowling score just to please Joey. Then Albert told Joey after Lucy got out of the car. Then, Albert told the whole school. I didn't think that was very nice. Well, getting back to the beginning, I think this is a really good book and that you probably would like this book too. You would also like this book if you like books that have to do with everyday life.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Maxium Cheater, January 18, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Cheater, Cheater (Paperback)
This book was ok, but it wasn't all that great. This book i kind of stupid, it's about this girl nmaed Melanie, she cheated on one of her test and thats all this book is about. she wants to know if she should tell or not, that's why i don't like this book because everyone cheat's no matter what. they ceat at least once in thier life. Melanie acts like a goodie girl when really she's not, and I think that's stupid. That's why don't really like this book and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. K.

Peace Out
